Scientists will reveal today that 1000 years ago, our ancestors were preforming successful cranial surgeries, even on the "lower classes" and the find raises some serious questions about the kind of medical technology avaliable at that time.

Although it's not excatly brain surgery...trepanation is a much earlier form of neurological "research." or rather...experimentation...

I think evidence goes as far bak as the Mesolithic...for those who don't know what trepanation is, basically it's when a hole (sometimes multiple holes over a lifetime) is created in the skull to relieve pain or pressure...

It hardly raises a question about medical technology... Its also long known.

Gotto be hard to scratch though, you dont want to go poking your brain
