I have often thought that annexing mexico would make sense.
First, it automatically rids the problem with immigration from Mexico...legal and otherwise. It also takes care of all the money sent back by the
working immigrants as then it would stay in the US. Further, the standard of living would rise with a consistant minimum wage down south. Plus, all
those factories that left for mexico would then be back in the USA.
Secondly, the tourist industry there would boom as no further need for Passports.. Port of Entry... all that nasty paperwork and preparation... and
you could actually drive there with no border checks...cool.
Third, look at all the vast natural resources...oil in particular. Then land and minerals... fruits and bananas and pineapples... and all those
tomatoes... no longer would the US have to deal with price fluctuations from a late frost in Florida.
Fourth... build another Pacific- Atlantic Canal...aka Panama Canal...but this time call it the Yucatan Canal. And the US runs it and keeps it this
time. How's that for "shovel ready jobs?"
Fifth, move NASA firther south and closer to the equator... all that open land and near equator...almost a perfect setting for space exploration to
launch from... again.. mucho mass "shovel ready jobs."
Just think... the USA would have a strangle hold on the Gulf of Mexico strategically, plus all that extended Pacific Coast line for new naval bases
and sea side resorts...and we could reclaim all of the ex-patriots and their taxes...
Annexing Mexico would be a win/win for all involved...I have been to mexico...into the deepest jungles and poorest villages. The people are incredibly
friendly and generous and poor. There are not too many cities of 35,000 people where at 11pm at night you can walk the streets and alleyways and feel
perfectly safe and no gunshots...did so in Tizimin, Mexico. Our group and a couple others totaled about 25... and we were the only Yankee Gringos in
Tizimin... stood out like a sore thumb, but after about 8 days... even we became part of the daily routine and people just got over us being there.
It is also amazing how quickly you pick up the language when you live it daily... it wasn't long before we were mixing english and spanish together
in the same sentence and even replying in espanol, mes amigos. The food was good too, but after 8 days eating at the Epollo Brujo...the chicken
Wizard... it was about 6 months in America before my wife and I went out for Mexican food...although what we know as Mexican Food and what is real
mexican Food is so very different.... even now, the smell of diced habaneros in lime juice makes me cringe.
