I think there may be something to this...
...I removed breads, cakes, biscuits, and breakfast cereals from my diet just before Christmas 2011 and gradually returned to my normal lean weight.

Those are the things I love the most, I even bake cookies to give as Christmas gifts, take a week off work to do it. Wondering if you went through a withdrawal or did you do it gradually. Also, did you give up pasta as well?

Like I said before, I think quitting smoking was easier than giving up wheat would be.

Yes I forgot to mention pasta.

I used to have cereal and yoghurt for breakfast - I now have 3.5 eggs (my dog gets the other half)
I have tuna in a clear Thai soup for lunch.
I snack on raw Almonds (sometime Macadamia or other nuts)
I have vegetables and a protein in the evening.

I am not silly about it, if I am served wheat foods with a meal I eat it...
...but when I have the choice I don't.

I had two friends who eliminated wheat and diary and saw the difference it made to them...
...so I thought I would give it a try and it worked...
...I am never hungry, sleep less and feel good.

troubleshooter:

You don't mention using substitutes for these items, that means you were able to give them up totally? I am looking on the internet for gluten free bread recipes, thinking its time to bring the breadmaker up from the basement. I would still like to have toast with my omelet in the morning.

Thanks for the encouragement,

I really wasn't just focused on wheat but avoiding carbohydrates generally and I am not sure what non-carb you can replace wheat with.

What I have noticed is that I can 'feel' the insulin surge when I have carbohydrates now...
...it comes as a warm glow and increased heart rate ... I really don't like it much.

I can relate to that feeling, Iwinder and I had to give up coffee many years ago, and although I still have a reg tea at breakfast, If I drink a cup of coffee now I get a rush and jittery...not a nice feeling. Amazing what the body does and doesn't like, and it lets us know too.

To be complete I should mention I supplement with Vitamin C 1000mg, Selenium, D3, Calcium, Magnesium and a micromineral complex.

I think it is important to fill the gaps in diet. Unless you live near a glacier and catch/raise your own meat and grow your own veg, chances are you are not getting all ninety essential nutrients the human body needs.

Inadaquate calcium alone can be responsible for about 300 diseases.

You make a good argument for traveling back in time, amazing how reliant we become on synthetic this and supplementing that. Take one thing out of the diet and replace it with another. Even what we cook our food in maters, I have my mom's old cast iron frying pans...which I know should be used but they are just so heavy and don't appreciate the dishwasher. Just about everything was cooked in them, even used them right in the oven. Now I'll need to find them and my breadmaker.

Convenience is everything these days, simple is so easily forgotten.

Thanks again,
YogaGinns

Are you sure that the bread is true whole wheat bread.
Many breads that are labeled whole wheat bread if you look at the ingredients on the label have bleached white flour in them.
Some even list bleached white flour as the first ingredient meaning its the main flour in the bread.

I am a type 2 diabetic and can tell the difference when i test my blood sugar level 2 hours after eating

I will spike 2 hours after eating a bread with any bleached white flour but not after true unbleached whole wheat bread.also watch out for bread with HFCS in place of sugar .

I've been gluten free for about 10 years. It's gotten much better as far as selections in both the grocery store and restaurants. I had pizza out last week, and a sandwich tonight. I eat pasta too. I've never found a good biscuit though..
Udis bread is good if grilled, bjs brew house has a good pizza and tinkyada is the best pasta. I have to cook almost everything I eat, but that's healthier anyway.
Its also easy for me to maintain a healthy weight because I can't eat the bad stuff.
Personally, I think it was triggered due to a highly processed diet that I had been eating you decades prior to my onset of celiac disease. I don't think we're meant to eat the typical American diet and it's making us sick.

All very good information. I have been struggling with thyroid problems and a bulging waist. I quit smoking and it has been downhill since with the weight battle. I am not as active as I used to be so the carbs just pile on the fat. I have tried to raise a decent garden, but have had bad water from the drought kill most of my garden before I could get any veggies from it. I refuse to use fertilizer so what survived is just surviving not thriving.

Next year or later this year I intend to try the aquaponics in a new area with more sunlight and then i can grow whatever I want, but until then it would be nice to learn what I can buy and eat for now. Keep the good advice coming for those of us just waking up to this.

I read this book some months back---as I am a celiac and get really sick from gluten.

The minute I stopped ingesting wheat, a whole list of symptoms dissapeared-----some that I've had for forty years.

There are many great products that are gluten free.

I don't find it that hard to maintain a gluten free diet. At first, though, you have to read the labels on everything.

Gluten is hidden in everything----including licorice, salad dressings, soups, etc.

I like this site. With a list of a vitamins or elements etc. and the comparison between different foods. What I have learnt from these lists is most vitamins and elemants we need can be supplied by Meat, Fish, Dairy, and Nuts in quite large quantities. And that vegetables are pretty poor in the amounts of nutrients they contain in comparison, despite what the media/vegetarians/vege industry tell us.

first off, most wheat crops are so heavily saturated with growth and pesticide chemicals it should be a crime, second,. the grain business has no place in your diet. leave it to making ethanol,.
I will venture to say that if 90% of americans would give up the grains in their diets they would not only loose wieght but gain health in the process, the Food pyramid needs to be corrected grains are not needed

Beer = needless carbohydrates.

Know all those men with big beer belly's? that is called fatty liver, and is a side effect of engorging the liver with sugars. It is how foie gras is made with geese.

Can this change to wheat, a diet staple, really be a factor that has increased the waistlines of the average North American and caused an explosion in the number of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes?

Every Type 2 diabetic in this country is told to get more exercise and that some Type 2 diabetics have 'cured' themselves by getting more exercise. Specifically Cardio Exercise.

There are 4 things necessary for someone to get Cardio Exercise. Three Physical and one Mental.

1.) Muscle Movement/Muscle Building - to get Cardio Exercise, you have to be able to move. Anything that keeps someone from being able to move their muscles effectively will keep them from being able to get the exercise needed to burn off their blood sugar and 'cure' themselves of Type 2 diabetes. A potassium deficiency, which can cause muscle atrophy and is the vitamin necessary for muscle maintenance is one. People with chronic diarrhea can get many vitamin and mineral deficiencies. That's why treating food poisoning is so important. The long term effects of untreated Salmonella poisoning are poorly documented. Other things could be arthritis and musculo-skeletal diseases/syndromes.

2.) Blood Flow/Circulation - anyone with any kind of circulatory or heart problem won't be able to get enough oxygen and nutrients to their muscles to be able to get the exercise needed to burn off their blood sugar and 'cure' themselves of Type 2 diabetes.

And this is the kicker...

3.) Oxygen - you have to be able to breathe to get Cardio Exercise. Every single person I know that has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes has symptoms of Oxygen Deprivation and Altitude Sickness. I bet you're wondering, how do you get Altitude Sickness at sea level or only a couple of hundred feet above seas level when most people only get diagnosed with it if they are higher than 10,000 feet up? Well, Altitude Sickness is caused by a lack of air pressure. When someone is pulled off the side of a mountain with symptoms, they used to get put in a hospital and into a hyperbolic chamber. They didn't add any extra oxygen, they just increased the air pressure. Anyone with a breathing problem where they can't get enough positive air pressure into their lungs will end up with the same symptoms as Altitude Sickness. And they will be fatigued and get winded very easily. And not be able to get the exercise needed to burn off their blood sugar and 'cure' themselves of Type 2 diabetes.

Oh, and oxygen-deprived muscles don't burn off any blood sugar.

And get this: people that have been put on extra Oxygen, that don't have a Lung Disease or Cancer, are wide awake, up, and bouncing off the walls.

Of course, if you not getting enough oxygen, you'll end up with problems in:

4.) Motivation - you have to be Motivated to get more exercise. Things like Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress, Allergies, or even Harassment can interfere with your Motivation.

How many Type 2 Diabetics that you know have been treated for problems in those 4 areas?

None that I know of.

But yet, these Doctors are more than happy to take everyone's money (including your insurance company's) but don't accomplish anything. No Doctor has ever 'cured' someone of Type 2 Diabetes. But people have been 'cured' of it.

It's hard to get exercise if your body doesn't have the ability to get exercise. Problems in one or more of those 4 areas is what's keeping around 20 million people just in the U.S. alone from getting enough exercise to 'cure' themselves of Type 2 Diabetes..

No, it's not a Type 2 Diabetes Epidemic we have in this country.

It's a Greedy and Incompetent Doctor Epidemic we have in this country.

You can eat just about anything if you get enough exercise.

Our foods in general are the issue.

We have a high carb, high sugar diet, out of convenience and affordability.

These carbs and sugars are the issues to our diabetic and other issues.

That is incorrect. Your muscles use glucose for food. All carbohydrates are converted to glucose by your body. You should be bouncing off the walls with a high carb diet. The muscles aren't using the glucose. If they were, then the person's blood sugar wouldn't be up.
