A new study published in the BMC Public Health
www.biomedcentral.com...

Shows that the worlds population is in danger of running out of food if obesity is not tackled

Unless we tackle both population and fatness, our chances are slim.
Professor Ian Roberts report author said

Fatness is putting the planet in danger

"Everyone accepts that population growth threatens global environmental sustainability - our study shows that population fatness is also a major threat

The planets people need to diet

The world's adult population weighs 287 million tonnes, 15 million of which is due to being overweight and 3.5 million is due to obesity, according to the study

Humanity could stand to lose a few pounds

If the entire human population stepped on a scale, the weight would be 316 million tons, or 632 billion pounds, a new study finds.

And tackling population weight is crucial for food security and ecological sustainability, they suggest.

Could ArmaGlutton be the new doomsday instead of Earth being pulped by Nibiru
One day in the future there could be only obese people left until they too starve to death after eating everything

The obese are all Hansel and Gretels. They are being fattened up for the harvest when their meat will be sold for food and their fat for fuel. Year :2042

It won't last...this obesity thing.
Once people actually have to work for their food, they can't sit around and eat anymore.
The problem with obese people, and those who "over-eat", is the convenience.
When that disappears, so will the fat.

I am a firm believer in activity, whether large or small.
If you are an active person, you can't be obese.
Well, that and controlling yourself.

Sheesh.

Not that I am for obesity but let's stop trying to control people.

The smokers have all been defeated, now they're working on the fat folks.

But...but...what about this?

wasted food

It's not the obese people threatening food reserves, it's the greedy ones.

LOL...I doubt it is actually obsesity that is threatening it. It is the enormous amount of waste, and the companies that have no problem wasting.

And yet, we continue to serve GMO, while not giving the life saving surgeries they need and want to live a healthy life. A 500 pound teen has to beg, borrow and steal to get a bypass. It is his/her only hope to live. Yet, no one wants to give them this option. They just want to continue feeding the obese and handing them remote controls to Xbox.. Obesity of the nature the OP is posting has just come about in the last 20 or so years. Think about it. How many OBESE kids did you go to school with? I don't even remember ANY fat kids, let alone obese. They weren't in existance. And we all ate meat and potatoes and pasta but no processed foods. I grew up in the sixties and don't remember eating ANY processed foods. And quess what, I wasn't fat, in fact, I was extremely thin. None of my friends were fat....EVER. Now, I see obese grade schoolers, middle school and high school and the rest of the population. We can't ignore the evidence forever. It is in plain site.

ETA: Look at your yearbooks. Obesity is a disease of the ninety's. Even in the eighties, I didn't see a lot of obesity. Mind you, it did exist I'm sure but it wasn't prevelant. My son was "just right", until he reached about 12 years old and really began eating the school lunches and started getting big. Granted he's now a big man, 6'5" 330 lbs but he's fat. He lives on fast food and pizza...crap. I wasn't able to sway him. If he outlives me, I will be surprised.

We are under constant demand to "improve" ourselves, but when will government improve itself? I think we should demand they cut their "fat" and BS.

Roger Clemens got charged with perjury, but who cares? Government lies to you everyday!

I don't think the obese are hurting our food supplies as much as they are hurting our medical. Maybe if everyone were on the "svelte" side, they would eat less. But the bottom line is there is plenty of food on this planet. It's just being hoarded, hidden or consummed by the obese and bad governments. If everyone in the USA/Brittan ate between 1500-2300 calories a day, there would be a lot to spread around to others.

This would not work and would be unfair on the Hunter because the pie munchers would not be able to evade the hunters in any way

Oh whatever, I look goooood!

Been waiting to use that picture.

I think many of us, myself included, are resource hogs. Every day there are more people. We seem to be breeding faster, living longer and eating more. I can see it becoming a real problem. Interesting thread OP. Other nations seem to be catching up to the US fatass level at a rather alarming rate. It is something to think about, how much food can the planet actually provide for us if we gobble and waste?

Just a thought, what if we fed the obese organic foods, in a very structured setting. Then we watched the fat melt off of them, gave them the skin surgery they needed to avoid rashes and such and changed the food source throughout the world. You have to wonder why third world countries have obese mothers with starving children. NatGeo didn't show that in the 60's, 70's 80's. What gives?

I can't believe some of these comments. I am 5'7" and was 118lbs before illness and medication (including steriods 4 times a year-still to this day), I rarely eat 1500 calories a day, but sometimes more & sometimes less. Yesterday I ate a salad, today.. nothing yet but I'm getting hungry. I've gained weight from both medicine and sedintary lifestyle (disabled). Should I be hunted down and killed or even ridiculed because I'm now a larger than average size. That's a rhetorical question.

Not all people who are overweight are that way by choice, some even have no choice. Lock me in a room and watch the fat melt off (ha ha), I've starved myself and gained weight. But of course I don't expect to be believed, as I didn't use to believe it could happen until it happened to me. I do realize that most overweight people are that way because they eat more than they burn off, but it's not uncommon to have weight issues even if eating right.

Isn't the dying kid in your avatar a real person in need of real help? Perhaps you do not use it in jest, but using such an image in an on-line avatar is just as exploitive and insensitive in its own way. Off topic I know. But the self righteousness in this one got to me. Glass houses... throwing stones... I'm sure you know that one.

On topic:

Over consumption in general is a problem, not just food, and it is a cultural one that is perpetuated by these same elite entities that are now trying to figure out how to profit from our over consumption as well. Talk about getting you coming and going.

I have a hard time with governments trying to regulate in guilt-driven social sanctions that are all about controlling people for the sake of exploitation, and conditioning compliance, and have nothing to do with actual social order or responsibility. I am afraid that "studies" like this contribute to the cultural mentality that will accept that sort of legislative manipulation. What a load of B.S.

Exactly. While there's an obesity problem in the world, the article just sounds like propaganda.

Just a few things....

I think the main threat to people's ability to eat is GREED more than gluttony.
Lots of food is thrown away. Lots of land is hoarded too- just resources in general. For goodness sake, we plant bradford pears with our tax dollars instead of productive fruit and nut trees.

I'm fat but I'm active. I take 10-20mg of prednisone every day. If you think you can't be active and fat, try taking predisone for a while. It put more weight on me in such a short time - I didn't even think it was humanly possible.

I currently produce about 1/3-1/2 of our food on my land. Not just mine, but my family's.
I planted a small garden for a senior citizen today so they could produce some of their own as well, and carried some canned goods that I made to a single parent I know.

All these generalizations - they aren't true for everyone, and that makes it wrong, IMO, to be so cruel to or to assume so much about anyone.

Dunno what's going on these days, it just seems that 'obesity' is a good bandwagon to get on to make one feel better about themselves or superior to others?

We can't have 'freaks' in the carnival anymore UNLESS it is the fat person, is that it? Who's freakier, the fat person or the person pointing at them? Oh what a good boy am I, look at that freak! Is that it? Bleh

I know a lot of really wonderful people that are fat. That's right - the fact that they are PEOPLE should come before the fact that they are fat, and I put WONDERFUL or GOOD before that.
