Unfortunately I cannot find an online video but my favourite is "Big Coin" by BEautiful South, a British pop band from the 90's with strong
political underlines. Sung by Paul Heaton, who also headed up the House Martins.
I like the song because from listening off the bat you wouldn't know what it was about, and they're one of the biggest selling bands there was in
the 90's so it's very mainstream and pop, while being genius
Big coin that you toss for heads or tails
Big coin that you let slip down the drain
Big coin didn't find where it landed
Big coin, big coin
Big coin that you dropped in the river
Little raft that took you across
Little hand that pulled it from the gutter
Big coin, big coin
It's a tiny little heart that challenges the coin
But the coin has no beat or no breath
Big coin won't even leave you a love note
Big coin, big death
Big coin that you held and you treasured
Big coin that you can't believe that you lost
Little kiss that helped you when you needed
Little kiss, big coin
Little heart that has no exchange rate
Big coin that could join the IMF
Little heart is only the greedy 'cause it's poor
Little heart, big coin
It's a tiny little heart that challenges the coin
But the coin has no north or no south
Big coin says it will never ever leave you
Big coin, big mouth
Little heart,
it ain't gold, it ain't silver
Little heart,
it ain't wasted on me
Little heart,
so much bigger than the coin
Little heart,
big guarantee
Little heart,
big guarantee
Little heart...
It's a tiny little heart that challenges the coin
But the coin has no north or no south
Big coin says it will never ever leave you
Big coin, big mouth
I first heard political messages in the songs of Bob Marley (and The Wailers). One of them, specifically being "Real Situation", goes like this:
Check out the real situation:
Nation war against nation.
Where did it all begin?
When will it end?
Well, it seems like: total destruction the only solution,
And there ain't no use: no one can stop them now.
Ain't no use: nobody can stop them now.
Give them an inch, they take a yard;
Give them a yard, they take a mile (ooh);
Once a man and twice a child
And everything is just for a while.
It seems like: total destruction the only solution,
And there ain't no use: no one can stop them now.
There ain't no use: no one can stop them now;
Ain't no use: no one can stop them now;
There ain't no use: no one can stop them now.
Check in the real situation (check it out, check it out):
Nation fight against nation
Where did it all begin? Wo-oo-o-o-oh!
Where will it end?
Well, it seems like: total destruction the only solution.
Mmm, no use: can't stop them;
W'ain't no use: ya can't stop them;
Ain't no use: no one can't stop them now;
Can't stop them now (no one can't stop them now).
There ain't no use: no one can't stop them now.
Everybody strugglin': ain't no use - ain't no use -
Ain't no use you even try;
Ain't no use: got to say 'bye-'bye!
Ain't no use! Ain't no - ain't no use: no one can stop them now
(No one can stop them now) [fadeout]
This is a song, "The Lines In My Hand", by Swedish progressive band Opeth, and I believe their first foray into a political message in their music.
I've heard it said that this song is basically about the Bush administration, but I feel it could apply to any of the current situations we face,
collectively, as a species.
Dying in the wake of gods, and decrees remain arcane.
And everything around us is a consequence of pain.
The writings on the wall depict a truth that no one sees.
A government of puppets blinded by another creed.
Burning voice of insanity, nothing is the same.
Barren lands for the idle man.
Find all the lines in your hand.
Blinding storms are surrounding us,
Take control.
In our cups, poisoned wine.
Find all the lines in your hand.

[Verse 1]
Yeah.... Harlem streets stay flooded in white powder
Like those mother#ers running away from the Twin Towers
Gun shots rock the earth like a meteor shower
Bowling For Columbine, fair, giving the media power
Innocence devoured like a chicken spot snack box
Government coc aine cooked into ghetto crack rock
Corrupt cops false testimony at your arraignment
Check to check, constant struggle to make the payments
Working your whole life wondering where the day went
The subway stays pakced like a multi-cultural slave ship
It's rush hour, 2:30 to 8, non stoppin'
And people coming home after corporate share croppin
And # flossin, mothers are trying to feed children
But gentrification is kicking them out of their building
A generation of babies born without health care
Families homeless, thrown the # off of the welfare
[Hook]
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
[Verse 2]
It's like Cambodia the killing fields uptown
We live in distress and hang the flag upside down
The sound of conservative politicians on television
People in the hood are blind so they tell us to listen
They vote for us to go to war instantly
But none of their kids serving the infantry
The odds are stacked against us like a casino
Think about it, most of the army is black and latino
And if you can't acknowledge the reality of my words
You just another stupid mother #er out on the curb
Trying to escape from the ghetto with your ignorant ways
But you can't read history at an illiterate stage
And you can't raise a family on minimum wage
Why the # you think most of us are locked in a cage
I give niggaz the truth, cause they pride is indigent
You better off rich and guilty than poor and innocent
But I'm sick of feeling impotent watching the world burn
In the era of apocalypse waiting my turn
I'm a Harlem nigga that's concerned with the future
And if your in my way it'd be an honor to shoot ya
Up root ya with the evil that grows in my people
Making them deceitful, cannibalistic and lethal
But I see through the mentality implanted in us
And I educate my fam about who we should trust
[Hook]
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
Homicide Harlem, BLAOW!, what's the problem?
It's a critical solution
And the east coast got the blues
It's a mass of confusion
Like the lies they sell to you
You got a glass jawed toothache
Of a mental disease
An they be runnin' round back
See 'em line up on their knees
'Cause the kiss ass sycophants
Throwin' penance at your feet
When they got nowhere to go
Watch 'em come in off the streets
While they're bangin' out front
Inside their slammin' to the cruch
Go on an throw me to the lions
And the whole damn screamin' bunch
'Cause the pissed-off rip-offs
'R' everywhere you turn
Tell me how a generation's
Ever s'posed to learn
This fire is burnin'
and it's out of control
It's not a problem you can stop
It's rock n' roll
I read it on a wall
It went straight to my head
It said "Dance to the tension
of a world on edge"
We got racial violence
And who'll cast the first stone
And sex is used anyway it can be
Sometimes when I look out
It's hard to see the day
It's a feelin' you can have it
It's not mine to take away
Lost in the garden of Eden
Said we're lost in the garden of Eden
And there's no one's gonna believe this
But we're lost in the garden of Eden
This fire is burnin' and it's out of control
It's not a problem you can stop
It's rock n' roll
Suck on that
Looking through this point of view
There's no way I'm gonna fit in
Don't ya tell me what my eyes see
Don't ya tell me who to believe in
I ain't superstitious
But I know when somethin's wrong
I've been draggin' my heels
With a bitch called hope
Let the undercurrent drag me along
Lost in the garden of Eden
Said we're lost in the garden of Eden
And there's no one's gonna believe this
But we're lost in the garden of Eden
Most organized religions make
A mockery of humanity
Our governments are dangerous
And out of control
The garden of Eden is just another graveyard
Said if they had someone to buy it
Said I'm sure they'd sell my soul
This fire is burnin' and it's out of control
It's not a problem you can stop
It's rock n' roll
Lost in the garden of Eden
(An we ain't talkin' about no
poison apple or some missin' rib ya hear)
Said we're lost in the garden of Eden
Said there's no one's gonna believe this
Said we're lost in the garden of Eden
This fire is burnin' and it's out of control
It's not a problem you can stop
It's rock n' roll
Anti Banker & Finanical Terrorist songs -
Feeling such incenduary rage over the latest news about the scam our UK banks pulled back in 2008 by fraudulently manipulating the "LIBOR" rate to
steal even more money from even more people.
I'm no song writer, but here is my take on it:
Murder a banker a day
Are you worth your time on earth
Do you pay your way each day
Lets say dearth indicates worth
Let me say its time to pay
Question the average man
If you like to waste your time
Dumb and dumber is the span
Business loves you anodyne
Good minds retreat to exist
Now bland minds are holding sway
Sharp minds must hide and desist
While surly minds make their play
How much can they be hated
How can we get the job done
How will you be abated
How could killing be made fun
This is a track by Aussie beatbox street performer Dub FX. Amazing artist - every sound you hear on this track is the dudes voice, including all
instruments.
FUTURE - DUB FX
Ahahaha
Ok
This one's goin' out to the people in control yeah?
Ya not in control for too long now
Free energy
You're out-numbered man
Where is the future where is the past
Astronomy without technology cannot last
Solar system colonies, teleport machines
Imminent optimism grasped
We're taking it back to our dreams
Full steam as we scheme into a future unseen
A blank canvas screen
We're taking it shaking it making it gleam
Let's scream
I want to evolve let me tell you what I mean
You see a nuclear weapons intention
Isn't for protection but destruction
I'm betting that the invention has a function of selection
To determinate how much to exterminate
While the reserve gets paid
Come on give me a break
Let's put our money into something that counts
Why all the bouts, when agony emphatically amounts
Let's not fall behind
Peace on earth is evolution for man kind
Long division is a timely process
Subtract through the shadows and darkness
Multiply your movements to shine
Add all your thoughts to equal sublime
I've spent so many days and nights
Trying to walk this earth
And what I've realised is that this whole universe
Is trying to sympathise giving us a veer to purse
But we ain't got no purpose so we just search an search
Blowing up the skies until the ozone bursts
Putting toxic waste up underneath the earth
We want to live longer, and still give birth
While all the information gets lost
I only ever here one song on the radio
And all the false reality on those TV shows
So I just hit my pedal let the bass lines flow
Open your mind or I'll show you the door just,
Shut your eyes so your soul doesn't know
Shuffle your feet on the dance floor
Let yourself go, show the bare minimal
Love is sublime and not subliminal
Long division is a timely process
Subtract through the shadows and darkness
Multiply your movements to shine
Add all your thoughts to equal sublime
That's right
One connected collective consciousness
That's right
It doesn't end until we decide it ends
You're out-numbered man
