An asteroid the size of a city block is set to fly by Earth Thursday (June 14), and you may be able to watch it happen live.

The near-Earth asteroid 2012 LZ1, which astronomers think is about 1,650 feet (500 meters) wide, will come within 14 lunar distances of Earth Thursday evening. While there's no danger of an impact on this pass, the huge space rock may come close enough to be caught on camera. You can watch the asteroid flyby on Slooh's website, found here: events.slooh.com...

2012 LZ1 just popped onto astronomers' radar this week. It was discovered on the night of June 10-11 by Rob McNaught and his colleagues, who were peering through the Uppsala Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia.

How cool is this? And for those of us who lack a prime viewing location, here is an online link where you can watch the asteroid live: watch the asteroid

Can you actually PROVE there is no celestial body as Nibiru? Maybe it aint here now... maybe it will come in 20000 years... can you prove it doesn't exist? Ancient scripts talk about it... What is the point of ridiculing people. We are on a site that people come in order to think out of the box... calling people ELETARDS makes you simply the biggest of the mentally challenged people... and probably complexic as well... Its like joining a skate forum to say how awesome is to make ice skating...

Apparently they just "discovered" the meteor in the past couple of weeks.

Nibiru is supposed to have a 3600 year orbit. If you're going to expand the definition to mean any planetary body not yet discovered then the term is rendered meaningless and redundant. It's also confusing since most people using that term mean something much more specific. In terms of a massive body with a 3600 year orbit... it doesn't exist.
www.springerlink.com...

can you prove it doesn't exist? Ancient scripts talk about it...

"Ancient scripts" and mythology talks about a lot of things. It doesn't mean I believe it. I also think that certain "translators" were full of it just as certain self-proclaimed "Mayan experts" are dead wrong about 2012 being the end of the world or even a Mayan prediction of the end of the world.

What is the point of ridiculing people. We are on a site that people come in order to think out of the box... calling people ELETARDS makes you simply the biggest of the mentally challenged people...

I like to speculate within reason, but the Elenin nonsense and Nibiru nonsense is just that, utter nonsense. Elenin was not an "ELE," it didn't cause "doom," and we didn't fly through its "debris." We, or at least some of us, knew that was the case long before September 2011, just as we know now that there is not some massive "Nibiru" planet that comes hurtling into the inner solar system every 3600 years.

Great spot thanks Smyleegrl. S and F for sure.

Always amazes me (even though it shouldn't) how these things just seem to pop up unspotted! 500m wide seems a bit big to overlook to me.........not saying it worries me, more slightly unnerves me....

As an aside, has anyone seen an article today about asteroid damage to a window on the ISS? There was an article about it somewhere on the web today but i can't seem to find it anywhere now - had to pop out of office for a hours and it has simply disappeared!

It may have been total rubbish or it may have been totally correct. Can't tell anyone anything about it though as i didn't get to read it! Any info on this anyone? Would be very much appreciated.

If it something hits us in 2000 years, then it isn't Nibiru.

For example, let's say I predict that a yet-undiscovered-by-mainstream-science comet (let's call it "Comet XX") will hit the Earth on January 1 of next year. Now let's say January 1 comes and passes without a comet striking the Earth. Obviously I would have been wrong.

Now, lets say 2000 years later a comet DOES hit the Earth. That does NOT suddenly make my earlier prediction right. Whatever comet that is that hits the earth 2000 years later probably has nothing to do with my prediction of "Comet XX" 2000 years prior.

I just did a collision test on this on a website.......

If this thing were to hit, at an average velocity of 25ks the crater would be 766m deep......with everything from 25k out totally obliterated......and 23,00+ km in diameter.......would cause a impact equal to 8magnitude quake....

Kinda scary if you think about it

As for people being "shocked" or "surprised" that a 500m asteroid was not spotted before now......

Think about the size and how much light it reflects. The answer to both is, not much at all.

This rock, while 500m wide might seem big to you, is tiny when compared to the Earth itself or other bodies out in space.

Compare it like this: There is a fly in your house. When do you notice it? All the way across the living room? Sometimes we might spot it then, but most of the time it's when it comes buzzing around our heads.

Now a much bigger asteroid, like 20km across, would be like having a small cat or dog across the living room. You'd notice it a LOT quicker......

I get your point but i thought the last few years had been spent sending a veritable armada of asteroid spotting satellites into orbit? Some with the intention of spotting things specifically this sort of size or smaller?

My surprise therefore is not really so much at the fact it has only just been spotted, more at the fact that it has been spotted only when it is so close to us. Makes me think, despite protestations otherwise, that something COULD (not will) hit us without us knowing about it beforehand......

Does that make sense?

It's also important to note that it was discovered millions of miles from earth during an opposition/close approach that brings it no closer than about 14 times the distance to the moon. That's the thing with these somewhat-larger asteroids, they tend to get found on more distant approaches than smaller boulders that rank in the "schoolbus" size. It still needs to be somewhat close to earth to be observable, but it doesn't have to come knocking on our door at sub-lunar distances for us to find it. Yeah, even more sensitive and rapid detection would be nice, but considering where we were 20 or 30 years ago we've come a very long way.

ngchunter nailed it. Just 20 years ago, there were more people working in a fast food place than there were people who work for like NASA, ESA, etc, actively looking for these objects. Ever since Shoemaker-Levy slammed into Jupiter, it really woke a lot of people up to what could happen here.

So we've come a long way. But while we are pretty sure of all the larger objects, there a still many objects that are smaller and not accounted for.

The sky is a big place, but even today we can't keep an eye on the whole thing.

Actually this is what Sitchin said:

However, Sitchin, who died in 2010, denied any connection between his work and Lieder's claims. In 2007, partly in response to Lieder's proclamations, Sitchin published a book, The End of Days, which set the time for the last passing of Nibiru by Earth at 556 BC, which would mean, given the object's supposed 3,600-year orbit, that it would return sometime around AD 2900.[17] He did however say that he believed that the Annunaki might return earlier by spaceship, and that the timing of their return would coincide with the shift from the astrological Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius, sometime between 2090 and 2370.[18]

Source

The problem with that claim is that the Chinese have historical records going back before 556 BC. There is no mention of Niburu, or any planet for that matter passing close to Earth, disasters happening, or any Annunaki visiting them.

Xia Dynasty

So either it happened and they weren't interested about it (doubtful), or they somehow missed the event, which would have had catastrophic effects on the orbits of all the inner planets, and those effects would still be here today.

Correct, if it had happened in the past, we most likely wouldn't be here talking about it.

Ironic that you defend a theory like the Eletard theory - even BEYOND it's already been proven fake and false.
Why are you clinging to your beliefs so vehemently?

You are asking why such people are ridiculed, here's your answer. Not enough that most of the theories are full with pseudo science and ridiculous things - even proven false over and over you people still hold on to the belief!

By the way...why should science not be aware of a "mysterious" celestial body...assuming that our instruments would be very well capable of detecting an extra body in our solar system, it would throw everything out of whack and i think it would be basic science/physics to determine there is another celestial body. Just: There is not one slight hint there is. There is nothing to prove or disprove.
