I get what you were feeling. The day i took the photo i never realized it would have more of an impact on me when i scrolled through my photos later on. When i saw the penguin and took the photo at that time, i was sad, angry, and as if i could feel its longing for freedom, but i walked away & only with a heavy heart. But, later that night when i went through my photos for the day it tore a piece out of my heart and soul.

I decided to share my photo to see if others would have the same reaction. I was thinking i am just being too emotional. But, i have now seen on this thread how it touched most people.

I am proud of my photo, i will not deny this. It speaks to me, and hopefully to others as well. But, it is still a very sad photo and when i look at it, it makes me love & appreciate what we have been given in this life so much more.

It is heartbreaking, to me. I can understand when we have to interfere to save a specie. Still, it is our fault that some animals are close to extinction. Unfortunately not everyone cares.

I think any wild animal would prefer freedom, no matter what they have to face everyday. That is nature, and they understand it better than we do. They know they have to deal with certain risks everyday.

Would i prefer to be behind bars, locked up, get three meals a day or face freedom with all the risks of everyday life? I'd rather die a free man. That would be my choice.

That is so heart-wrenching.

This is why I never go to zoos or aquariums if I can help it, though there are the occasional field trips. It's just so depressing to see the animals all cooped up. Call me crazy but I I can actually feel their despair. They often can be seen engaging in repetitive behaviors that are associated with boredom and depression in animals.

It's just wrong.

We should be preserving natural habitats and establishing/endouraging nature preserves for the more endangered animals. With T.V. and the internet that can be used for educational purposes, there is just no good reason for a zoo or an aquarium in 2012.

Anything that might be learned is skewed by the effects of captivity and if we want to help species breed, etc I'm sure they would be far more productive in the wild. Or just breed in captivity and release into their natural habitat.

I believe it is all because of compassion and it showed me how many people actually do care about earth.

The photo spoke volumes to me, hence why i shared it.

If we can start to love and respect the smallest of things in nature, we will become better as a human race.

That is a very emotional photo. I know they're "well taken care of", but separation from their specie (even though they might have 5-10 other penguins in their pen) is unforgivable. It's not right to take a social creature like a penguin and keep him locked up, no matter how lavish the decorations and meals are.

First of all, as i said, humans come before any animal. This is a photo i took and decided to share it.
