Order of Operations - PEMDAS

Let the debate begin .....

It's 9, and I can't believe people don't understand order of operation. How do you debate it? It's a right and wrong question.

You also go left to right, if that helps.

Oh, and when there is no operation to sort out in between the parenthesis, you can treat is as multiplication.

The debate depends on whether you rewrite the action after solving the parenthesis.

6 / 2 (1+2) =

do you rewrite it like this 6 / 2 ( 3 ) =

or like this 6 / 2 x 3 =

Does it matter?

I actually had a hard time figuring out how you could come up with one as the answer.

6/(2(1+2))

Thanks OP, now my head hurts. :bnghd:

Yes, but when written like this

6 / 2 ( 3 ) =

Do you do the action of the parenthesis first?
or
When you solve the first action in the parenthesis does it get rewritten like this

6 / 2 x 3 =

The way it's written is deceiving...

Excuse me for the double post, didn't mean to.

Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.
6/2(1+2) is 1.
6/2(3)
6/6
1

Wait... Google says that it is (6÷2) x (1+2).
Maybe this question is a matter of opinion?

I've heard of the dumbing-down of American education, but dear God, what are they teaching in schools these days? Order of operations should be the first thing on the plate. There is no answer but 9. Now, understanding that 9 is the answer, figure out how that comes about and reject any other logic. And never use that logic again--for this problem or any other....

Yeah exactly...I'm actually looking this up and the answers are split evenly between 1 and 9.

What's causing the confusion is the "2(3)" part. Does multiplication by juxtaposition take precedence in a problem like this?

Nope, it doesn't. The first thing you do with the parenthesis is to finish any operation inside it, and once it's down to number, the parenthesis can be treated like multiplication.

Edit: and I am 100% sure of this

I understand how it works but it just doesn't look right to me to divide then multiply because it goes against PEMDAS.

The parenthesis are done first (1+2) which equals 3.
Then, since there are no exponents you would move on to 6/2. Though in the acronym PEMDAS multiplication comes first, in the equation division comes first, and in any form of math when dealing only with division and multiplication you do the problem from left to right. Thus you are left with 6/2 (which is 3) times 3, which gives you an answer of 9.
