I was wondering is the Oshkosh M-ATV going to replace the Humvee, or is it going to be a purpose built vehicle, which is to be built in small numbers
for areas where an MRAP vehicle is necessarry? It would seem a bit expensive for use in say, Belgium.
All the up-armor in the world still leaves Humvees vulnerable to IEDs with their flat bottom chassis. The M-ATV is designed to be more mobile than
previous MRAPS while still protecting crew from explosions.
In the future you might see combat units on the "front lines" replace humvees with these as they can, but in the big picture humvees will continue
to dominate military motor pools in all their variants for years to come and you'll still see them in operations where the threat of IEDs or ambush
scenarios are lower.
I've not seen an M-ATV in person yet but have operated an International Maxx-Pro for a time. It was arguably not very all terrain friendly.
