Just a query thread as im considering putting my webskills to a bit of use but would like a bit of feedback first before i piggyback another site onto my web host

What would make a good UFO website?

Is it the layout? The language used?(avoid or keep ufo jargon? use or dont use the words 'debunk' 'mainstream' etc the sightings on it?(E.g. no michael cohen specials, or the creators insight offered? how frequently it is updated?

Please feel free to contribute as much or little as you like to this, It seems to me that most ufo website i come across are always very dark in colouring, look very basic/unprofessional and you cant help but spot the innevitable porn advert no doubt due to google adsense.

What would make a refreshing change?

90´s retro style look with lots of green because it shows that the site is high tec. and a poster of Xfiles "i want to believe"

Nah friend in my opinion a nice and clean layout with some solid and easy to read writing is a go for me.

In my opinion its the content.

Filter the garbage from the good and have input from serious people only, no one liner jokes or shiz like that that make a mockery of any discussion.

Depends. Do you want a reputable site, or a site where airheads can post coffee cans flying through the air?

This ufo site looks nice: www.mufon.com...

I use to make non professional websites awhile back and Theme and organisation is a key part. Take this site for example. It is laid out in a clean format.

Will you be making this site from scratch using something like Dreamweaver or a premade templet?

well i dont want a site full of sightings of no substance, e.g. the suns article of a boy photographing a halogen desk lamp then claiming it to be a ufo.

Sorry gonna quickly go O/T for a sec, but if anyone has seen that photo the boy took, then seen the camera he was using, now it looks to have quite a meaty lense on it, however i seem to think that my iphone 3gs (worst camera in the world) would of managed to fit in more pixels.

right back on topic, iv seen the mufon website loads etc but i dont like some of the way its displayed, its a bit outdated now and in need of modernising,

im toying between 2 ideas really.

one having it ultra modern and Ipad/phone friendly.
could be something along the lines of this (note this is an example i found online and not my own work)

or the other idea is to have it laid out like a newspaper. but do be honest i usually knock up about 5 completely different designs then narrow it down

I dont want just any tom dick or harry to have articles etc, only people who have valid input,

To answer the other persons question, il be using dreamweaver to write it from scratch , might just alter one of my CSS layouts i still have from uni, il be creating multiple versions etc, at the minute im just waiting for photoshop to install so i can do a bit of creative designing

In my opinion, one word EVIDENCE. Without that then it's just about the same ol' stuff.

How many times are you going to post that fake alien footage? It's a guy in a costume prancing about some woods that's all.

So basically this is the start to your website?

No bad actually. You can do a lot with photoshop, but all in all it's a good start

What are you making the site for?

Is it because you have a real interest and want to share great information with your readers?.....if so then a clean looking site with great content above all else, and a minimum of ads.

If you are creating a site to make money, then go for all the bells and whistles approach, adsense ads, affiliate articles and products (ebooks etc) and market the arse off it!.......you'll still need good content though.

What makes a good UFO Website?

Photos of pretty women with large breasts holding a grey hostage and threatening to shoot him with their space pistols.

Any thing cheezy, retro, comic bookesque, with lots of soft core sex and violence; appealing to the fantasy adolescent in everyone.

But if you are going to take a more conventional approach...I like this one.

Just what the world needs, another UFO website.

What you need to have, before worrying about design and layout, is SOMETHING TO SAY

Thanks for that however i do not agree with you in the slightest

A book can be the most interesting thing you ever read, however if that book looks like its been kicked through ten tons of dog #, your not going to even read it cause you aint going to go past the front cover. The same can be said about choosing your girlfriend / Car etc. The most important thing is to have something Clear , Concise, and user friendly.

but on another note, Do you realise how common a search 'UFO' is on the internet, now i currently already have plenty of other websites online offering many things (Digital Photography editing, Remote IT Support), so i can piggyback a little free advertising onto a site which will hopefully get many views.

Obviously offering a view point which differs from other sites is where the key lies. Every UFO site has the same stories, its how those stories are presented which makes you return to that site

Please don't use black/dark as background if you want give more credit for you site... When I see a website with dark/black background I always imagine it is a job from a kid that want the site seems "cool"

But after reading your response to others users I don't expect much from your website
