June 8, 1967: Israel Attacks USS Liberty

Tomorrow will mark a sad day 45 yrs ago
when Israel attacked a US warship in the ME
for no apparent reasons

The result of the attack was:
- Liberty severely damaged,
- 34 crewmen killed,
- 171 crewmen wounded

Pretty sure the boat had a big US flag on IT
and before you attack someone you need to make sure
you have visual confirmation that it is the enemy and not an allied friend

Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attacked the USS Liberty in international waters off Egypt’s Gaza Strip. Israeli aircraft fired napalm and rockets at the intelligence ship that was well marked as a U.S. vessel. The Liberty called for assistance but radio transmissions were blocked by Israel. The lightly armed vessel was eventually able to make contact with the U.S. carrier, Saratoga, whose 12 fighter jets and four tanker planes were launched to defend the Liberty.

Shortly after the aircraft were deployed, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the planes to return to the carrier. The Israeli air raid left nine of the 294 crew members dead and 60 wounded. Israeli torpedo boats also attacked the Liberty. The ship successfully dodged four of the torpedoes but was hit at the waterline by one. With severe damage to its hull, the Liberty launched its life boats, but these were also met with attack, a violation of international law. The Liberty did not sink and Israel retreated. The damaged USS Liberty managed to sail to a safe port. A total of 34 Americans were killed and 171 were wounded in the two hour attack.

Israel later apologized for the attack and paid $6.9 million as compensation to the families of the dead and wounded. In 1980, Israel and the U.S. came to an additional settlement of $6 million plus 13 years of interest for damages to the vessel. Israel claims they had mistaken the Liberty for an Egyptian military vessel. U.S.and Israeli reports also concluded the attack was a mistake due to confusion of the identity of the ship. However, Liberty survivors and some U.S. officials from the time say they believe the attack was intentional; done in order to conceal Israel’s planned seizure of Syria’s Golan Heights, which occurred the next day. Officials say that the Liberty, an intelligence ship, would have picked up in the communications in planning the controversial seizure of Golan Heights.

What really happened on that day .. did the USS Liberty intercepted a radio signal
that would embarrasse Israel .. and since they have an ego the size of the sun
they though they would get away with it .. tried to sink it and kill everybody on board ..
but they couldnt and had to retreat like cowards after the sneak attack

Someone from inside .. a traitor inside the US government
told the 12 jet and 4 tanker not to assist the USS Liberty and to return to the carrier

Im pretty sure that same persone told Israel that he will cover it up no problemo
and not let the news show to the world .. how Israel really dont care about others except themself
when it come to divide and conquer

Will Israel pay their respect tomorrow and make a prayer to the ones killed, wounded and their familly ?
Will Obama say something about it ?

First I am a US Navy veteran and what I find most appalling about this incident is that our government placed a spy ship in a war zone to listen in to all communications of both sides. Then our government went ahead and supplied information to the Arabs which they obtained while doing survalence. The Israeli government caught wind and attacked our ship.

The sick part is we could have defended the Liberty but Washington let my fellow sailors die to hide the fact we were playing both sides . The truth of that day, peace.

So you think this particular US spy ship was a rogue ship working for both side
and wanted to prevent a big war by leaking the info of an attack on the GH
to a elected democratic country (Syria) so they can prepare their Defences and resist the intruder ?

The idea of the ship going "ROGUE" is as much a lie as there ever could be.
If that was the case the US would have tried the captain and hung him out to dry saving face for all of the perpetrators of this crime, instead they gave him a CMH......silently.
There is NO excuse for what was done to the USS Liberty.
The terrorist state of israel just did not want the world to see them continuing hitlers work is all.

The ship wasn't in a war zone it was in international waters. And we provided no information to the Arabs that has been pointed out already. But if it were true that we gave info to the Arabs then why wasn't Israel able to provide any proof of this?

The Israelis were attacked by six Arab states and the US spies on thier ally the israelis sending info to the Arabs . We get caught and leae our sailors to die so the truth can't be told . It was a shameful cowardly act by Johnson who hated the Jews and left our sailors to die . The Israelis did what they had to to survive and probably got the OK to kill all aboard from our government once the shooting started.
