This is one of the coolest things that I have ever seen! I am going to do my best to post pics and links. I took these photos at about 1pm today in South West Florida in my backyard. I am sure there is some boring scientific explanation as to what it is...but it is frickin' cool. Just thought I would share. Sorry about the quality of the photo(s)...they were taken with a decent cam through dirty Oakley sunglasses.

Mods feel free to move if I haven't posted in the right place.

Does this have anything to do with the Venus Eclipse, which is scheduled to happen tomorrow? Perhaps you're getting a sneak-peek?

(I cant tell much from the picture you posted)

www.tcpalm.com...

"The transit of Venus, a celestial event happening the first week in June, truly is rare. It won't happen again for more than 100 years.

On June 5 or 6, depending on the time zone, millions of people around the world will be able to watch Venus glide across the sun. It will be earth's last glimpse at the transit until Dec.11, 2117."

No this is not a lens flare...this is exactly how it looks in the sky. I am trying to post a video that I took which is a MUCH better example.

Solar Halos are so COOL. Especially when there is a halo around the Moon. The first time I saw that I was awestruck by the beauty of it. The cosmos has so many wonders, it's unfortunate I won't be able to see them all.

Solar halo's are neat.
Lunar ones are even neater!

This is related to the 'sun dog' anomaly, im sure if you do some looking into sun dogs you'll find the reasons why these appear, im not sure but the earth and solar system can do some amazing things

See what? Are you looking at the halo around the sun or the sphere below? The sphere looks like a lens flair, but I'm also happy to accept that it is Venus.

Closest visual match seems to be circumhorizontal arc. Ice crystals in the atmosphere apparently. Pretty though, sun dogs too.

I am just looking at the halo...the speck is just that...a speck of dust on the lens of the dirty sunglasses that I used to filter the camera with.

I am pretty sure the OP is referring to the sun halo. Very cool picture, thanks for sharing.

You know what it reminds me of...

The all seeing eye...

It's like a big eyeball in the sky

Images like this really make you wonder how we were driven to come up with all this symbolism that has been passed down and along into secret societies..

Really nice photo..

It will be windy tomorrow.

Come back and tell me if I was right.

Thing is, if you learn the boring scientific explanation, you will then be able to figure out the right atmospheric situations that creates various phenomena and always know when and where to look for earths natural beauty...be able to bring a date to a late night full moon stroll under a fairy ring moon, things like that.

Understanding can make you seem almost magical to some

I think it looks really cool.
