Technically you're right. The officer was fundamentally trespassing. He was at the wrong house and basically walked onto someone's property and killed their dog.

However I would probably be hung for killing a cop. That im afraid is just the reality. The justice system would heavily favor the cop. It would set a precedent that would never be allowed in our society.

...But i agree with you.

Yep.

There is "right" and there is "legal" and then there is the real world.

I wouldn't want to be the precedent setter either. Idealists are usually only appreciated after they are drawn and quartered!

And law enforcement wonders why much of the general law-abiding public no longer respects them.

Absolutely. Well put, that is exactly what we should take from this story. We are damned if we do damned if we don't.

How are we supposed to live in a civil society when cops can just kill anything they deem as a threat. My first instinct would have been to get down on a knee and say "come here sweetie" not draw my weapon and fire away.

We are being treated as suspects who they may have to kill, not civilians who they are trying to keep happy.

...one day though, they are going to kill the wrong persons dog. One day they're going to be at the wrong end of an AR. God knows mine is cleaned and oiled.

This is completely insane.

Why do we hear stories like that all the time? It seems to me that a growing majority of police officers are actually unfit of holding that position and serving the public.

Police in Amerika kill more innocents than 'terrorists' EVER WILL!

Sounds like you need to get shot in your face.... Do you see how stupid that last statememt was? The officer is clearly in the wrong and should be disciplined, but to say he should lose a family member is asinine. Don't give me the whole "animals are people too" routine, I have pets, I love them. But a dogs life doesnt equal a human life, & if you think it does then you'd better be a vegetarian, because then cows, chickens & pigs are equal to humans as well.

Exactly - not a fair comparison. More fair would be to expect the officer to watch someone dear to him get shot in the leg while he watches from the chair he is tied to. Then again, since my dog would have given his life for me, I can only be expected to return in-kind. I don't know how to be any other way. Loyalty is loyalty and it doesn't understand DNA.

you're right, but maybe a good knock to the chops of the officer was due. I wouldn't let someone just shoot my dog, and completely get away with it. as far as it looks right now, the cop isn't getting any discipline at all, but a pat on the back as per usual in this type of situation..

People need to get involved locally and demand every police officer receive training on how to deal with family pets without using deadly force. The mailman use to walk our streets and neighborhoods delivering mail everyday, the only thing they could carry is pepper spray.

I think that officer should be fired if hes that scared of dogs.It looked like a pit-bull, so i shot it.

It'll never happen, In Service training is now @ a minimum. The administrators are reducing budgets and laying off personnel. At my former agency , we weren't even issued service pistols , you bought your own. The department ordered them & took the money out of your 1st check. They've even done away with the uniform allowance.

This wasn't an abused aggressive pitbull being used to guard a stash house (It sucks when they get killed because it's not the dogs fault it's owner is a s***bag) It was a family pet, if you can't read the body language of a canine that gives you clear involuntary indicators of it's motive...I don't know how you'd survive on the street dealing with 2 legged predators. This guy is full of fear and has bad instincts. Most People & Animals give you signs to tell you what's about to go down (whether they mean to or not) , you just have to be able to read them.

If I could trade an out of control trigger pumping moron cops life for that of a livestock animal* I would in a moment. As for their children damaged goods from the start- the apple does'nt fall far from the tree and so on.

* I haven't heard many stories of livestock breaking into houses and killing pets. Cops breaking into the wrong house and killing at will...Too many- Far, Far too many.

to reiterate what i said before.

i consider my dog a family member, and i believe in an eye for an eye, or in this case a family member for a family member.

What is next? They will walk up and shoot your kids playing in your front yard and claim they thought they were carrying a gun??

That's quite a leap in logic...

It is not that big a leap in logic. Police here already tase and mace children whenever they feel "threatened".
