Reminds me of listening to audio stories on cassette tape titled Benjamin Blümchen ("Benjamin Blossom") as a kid in Germany.
The series began in 1977 and featured the adventures of the titular Benjamin, an elephant who lived in a German zoo and was best friends with a local boy called Otto.

In the 4th story Benjamin goes to Africa where he meets a herd of elephants.
From what I recall things get off to a rocky start, but he's finally accepted by the matriarch of the herd, but decides he prefers being with his buddy Otto and returns to the comforts of the Neustadt zoo.
I guess in that story the elephant was also a "cultural hybrid" of sorts.
How oddly prophetic for me, although emigrating from Germany to Africa (not my choice as a kid), I didn't quite end up living with elephants, or in a Tarzan situation.
