Warplanes will defend Chicago's skies during NATO

Warplanes will be over Chicago on Friday, and fighter jets will be on alert this weekend – all to keep Chicago’s skies safe during this week’s NATO summit, according to a statement released Thursday by the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

NORAD said it will conduct an air defense exercise over Chicago on Friday to give the FAA, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard and the NATO Joint Operations Center an opportunity to practice coordinating air intercept and identification skills. Air

In preparation for the upcoming NATO summit in Chicago this weekend, NORAD has conducted an air defense exercise
( Amalgam Virgo 12-NATO ) that started at 9a.m. this morning and lasted for two hours.

Norad has also announce that Air Force fighters will remain on alert throughout the event to keep Chicago’s skies safe during this week’s NATO summit.

Thank god for that! I was up for the last few nights tossin' and turnin', worried sick that the UN people would be hit by an air strike. What a devastating loss that would be! To loose Chicago and a bunch of UN leadership... Shudders. Hopefully they will remain safe so they can continue screwing up the world.

This is NATO in Chicago. The UN is in NY.

The past few weeks has been full of news about all the preparations and defense plans for Chicago during this weekends NATO meeting. I don't recall past meetings getting all this onslaught of "defense" propaganda. My be it is just me but it just seems like a waste of tax payers money. Of course they probably do have something to fear. But this one is over-the-top.

This weekend is either going to be really interesting or a real let down. I feel as though I am waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Not unexpected, and don't forget when you hear a plane (or perhaps do not) flying over the city of my birth, and you look up "SMILE"! Your on semi-candid camera. For my money, I would certainly pity anyone who would go out of their way to piss off Chicago's current mayor. Mud wrestling was never my thing...

I agree with you but not for the reasons you may realize. NATO was created to provide what was referred to as a "painful boundary". It was formed to provide a protection for the free states of western Europe after WW-2. Those European member states who joined NATO after WW-2 were given a promise, I assure you it was true. In he NATO charter it states, "An attack on any nation by anyone is an attack on all allied nations" That was no bluff.

Yup, Americans would have gone to nuclear war to protect what was then West Germany. It is somewhat comforting that even today many people of a united Germany, (and many Americans) still don't believe that. Well it is true, so deal with it. I guess that means the job was done well. But beaming back to the present.

What GW Bush did I had major league disagreements with, believe me. I felt it was a serious misstep to invite newly freed Eastern block states into the very exclusive NATO club. And under GW, we started sending NATO troops all over the world?!? If you want to create a world wide police force then do so, but god damn it call it so! NATO is and was a very exclusive AND a defensive club. And if American live's are going to be lost, make f****** sure its for the right reasons, and not because being a member of NATO is better then a platinum card. Thats a big problem with NATO membership being turned into a status symbol.

It would seem the current President has not dangled NATO membership in front of countries in order for their troops to be American proxies and therefor fight on our behalf. I really like that. Membership in such an exclusive club as NATO should never be wielded as ones own mafia. As those to harsh concerning GW? Yes I think they are. The really scary part is he was never bright enough to connect the dots. As for an "effective" world level peace keeping force? It would be nice to address this problem from were it begins.

One way to do that is to broaden communications and internet contacts all over the world. Let people see and experience the lives lived in the free developed world, and you know what? There going to want it to. This may not shock everyone., but its also true. If your to hung up with shopping, your really to busy to kill anyone.
