Doppelganger
(German: "double goer"), in German folklore, a wraith or apparition of a living person, as distinguished from a ghost. The concept of the existence of a spirit double, an exact but usually invisible replica of every man, bird, or beast, is an ancient and widespread belief. To meet one's double is a sign that one's death is imminent. The doppelganger became a popular symbol of horror literature, and the theme took on considerable complexity. In The Double (1846), by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, for example, a poor clerk, Golyadkin, driven to madness by poverty and unrequited love, beholds his own wraith, who succeeds in everything at which Golyadkin has failed. Finally the wraith succeeds in disposing of his original. An earlier, well-known story of a doppelganger appears in the novel Die Elixiere des Teufels, 2 vol. (1815-16; "The Devil's Elixir"), by the German writer of fantastic tales E.T.A. Hoffmann

I ask this question because I have had on many occasions (too many to recall) been asked by a stranger whether we have met before, or the stranger will say - you look exactly like ....... The expression on the face of this person is always the same - complete bewilderment and confusion. Sometimes it's so bad that I will be accused of being a liar for not acknowledging a prior relationship.
I have always found this kind of funny and just dismissed it as a frivolous amusement.
Now I'm starting to think that there could be more to this than being a simple anomaly or glitch in the matrix.
Could we be meeting other people in the astral realm and projecting our memory in to this reality ?
Is it plausible that we might have a spirit twin - out there reaking havoc on our behalf ?
If you believe we all come from one source, could it be that we are simply meeting ourselves, over and over again in different guises?
Hmmmmm.
Any thoughts or personal experiences on this topic ?
Peace Out

My twin died from cancer when we were seven. There have been numerous times where I though the was alive because this one kid, who's name I havent yet learned keeps showing up.on one instance we were t the same bar wearing the same clothes!
It is indeed very freaky but I'm still alive so I'm guessing the death warning is a stretch

The tricky part to this is a "spirit" double, versus a "physical" double (a twin). Though I am familiar with the concept of a doppleganger, I have not researched the concept to know enough if the double - or each entity, the single and the double - would represent different aspects of an individual soul or spirit. Fundamentally, if there weren't sharing the same spirit, though looked exactly alike, then how could there be a doppleganger? That would just be an evil twin.
If you look at ancient Greek history, they had a belief that there were three primordial creatures formed as follows:
1. Male and Male, composed of four arms, four legs, two heads, two sets of same genitalia, etc.
2. Male and Female, composed of four arms, four legs, two heads, separate sets of genitalia, etc.
3. Female and Female, composed of four arms, four legs, two heads, two sets of same genitalia, etc
I forget the lore (I think the gods separated them, to keep them distracted from becoming like the gods, distracted by looking for their other half), but the concept would explain soul mates, homosexuality, etc. Perhaps, the doppleganger motif could work itself out of that concept or something similar.
Anyway, I remain open-minded to the concept, though I have never met my own (thank God, according to your introductory text). I have come across people saying (as I am sure you all have) that I remind them exactly of someone else, vice versa.
Interesting stuff to think about.edit on 14-5-2012 by alyoshablue because: typos

That's an interesting theory!
I've had encounters with strangers where we've had an instant connection and they feel so familiar to me. My strangest experience was when I was waiting for a train in Germany and this woman approached in the opposite direction. We both looked at each other with big smiles and were both about to speak when at the same exact moment we realized me were in fact strangers. It was so odd, not only from my reaction but her same exact reaction to me!
I thought and thought about what it could have been and finally surmised that we must have known each other in a past life. While spending time in Germany I did have a lot of deja vu and felt very "at home" there. I guess it could be possible that instead of a past life memory I was living the memory beforehand? That's worth considering.
