Beastie Boys rapper Adam Yauch (a.k.a. MCA), 47, dies

NEW YORK — Adam Yauch, the gravelly voiced Beastie Boys rapper and the most conscientious member of the seminal hip-hop group, has died. He was 47.

Yauch's representatives confirmed that the rapper died Friday morning in New York after a nearly three-year battle with cancer.

Also known as MCA, Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous salivary gland in 2009. At the time, Yauch expressed hope it was "very treatable," but his illness caused the group to cancel shows and delayed the release of their 2011 album, "Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2."

Yauch was one-third of the iconic rap group that debuted in 1979, injecting a punk rock sound into hip-hop, which had been dominated by black performers. The group is one of the longest running musical acts, still performing 25 years after the three friends from Manhattan took the mainstream stage.

Farewell man...

My thoughts go out to him, his family and friends.

A true innovater in all he did and changed the way people perceived a genre of music which still reaches people today.

A sad loss.

I just saw this (been swamped all day) and, even though it was inevitable and we all knew it was coming, it's still sad as hell.

Hopefully, he's fighting for his right to party in some higher place.

I'm so bummed out by this. I guess it's a dose of mortality (he's just a couple years older than me)

So sad.

Condolences to his family.

At least he left an awesome legacy of music. I feel like I grew up with him/them.

Frack! This is just so depressing. Life just zooms by...feeling so old now.
