Maybe by spreading the message, that's our way of "Doing something" as you so eloquently put it. I appreciate you keeping our greenery active and alive, but whens the last time you did something nice for another human, just based on the act of being nice?

I could go on...The point is that when you read, using your imagination, you'll find yourself considerably less stressed and able to view things from others points of view far more easily than someone who doesn't.

Makes you wonder about horror stories, crime stories (as in books). What does that do to you? Do you empathize with the criminal and the way he/she thinks?

I get your point about movies and how they do most of the work for you, and I agree with you. But, what about movies like Saw, Silence of the Lambs, etc... When you watch people being tortured, surely to some extent you are experiencing that torture as well. Maybe that's why society is so screwed up lately...deep in our psyche There are very few people who stay away from things like this completely. I haven't watched a horror movie in about 7 years. I couldn't anymore.

Now we are getting movies about Alien Invasions, and series like V. What is that doing to us? Desensitizing or planting fear ?

Fantastic post.

What you are describing has nothing to do with god though. If you someday make time to investigate science, you will maybe find the answer, but i encourage you to continue your path as you are doing now.

What you are looking for explained in the most "known" association would be GOD,through the eyes of a being not knowing\understanding.

And you are closer than you think,be careful.

OP...Please do not take this as dragging down your piece just a little clarity. Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is just that...a theory not a discovery. It has not been proven. It has spawned however, to get back in line, a revival of sorts propelling us in a GREAT direction!!!! Being a theory it still has it's antagonists making viable arguements to the contrary. I, as many here, track with you post and laud you for the same.

Thank you

You would loose all on you private thoughts and feelings

Maybe that is what is holding us back.

"People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality; their feelings most of all. People talk about how great love is, but that’s bull#. Love hurts. Feelings are disturbing. People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous. How can they deal with love if they’re afraid to feel? Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they’re wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It’s all in how you carry it. That’s what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you’re letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain." ~Jim Morrison~

Fantastic post.

As a matter of fact when we practice compassion in the way you expressed it in your post you observe the change within and everything outside in our field of comprehension of people ,situations and things changes as well.

As I have read a book that was explaining how we see ourselves as the walls of a glass bowl we can observe what is inside and what is outside we can observe the bowl empty and full but we fail to realize we are what is inside we are the glass and we are what is outside of the bowl.

Your post is just Beautiful.

Thank You!

What this thread is about is empathy.

Compassion comes from empathy; to feel another's plight as if it's your own

This is still a great thread though!.....sorry to be so picky

here is a cool video...I think everybody should see

I really don't see human emotions being a major advancement. An advancement into what, anyway? A Utopian society of peace and understanding? Peace and understanding do not require emotions of any kind. The base requirement of peace is knowledge. Emotions are a catalyst thrown into the mix that cause nearly any random assortment of positive and negative outcomes.

I really was hoping to be reading about the advancement of nano technology or the utilization of a discovery of the higgs boson but I've been deeply disappointed. If you want to learn about emotions being the greatest thing to ever grace conscious matter then read "the journey of self discovery" by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. A bunch of nonsensical hogswash claiming there is no importance in discovering the true fundamental structure of reality.

Surely one of the greatest advances in human understanding will be the ability to actively manipulate matter on the atomic or sub-atomic level. Or perhaps the ability to read neural pulses and convert them into binary code. Think how vastly different today's modern human society is from what our ancestors thought it would be. Our future will most likely be unlike anything we could ever begin to imagine today and it is going to arise from the pursuit of knowledge, not compassion.

Compassion means putting yourself in another’s shoes and trying to see from their relative perspective.

Well actually no that is not compassion, it's empathy.

Compassion would be if I felt sympathy for this person who's shoes I was imagining myself in and I then felt a strong desire to help this person.

Its just like when George W felt empathy, sympathy and compassion for the people of Iraq as it was clear to George that these Iraqi's yearned for their country to be just like the US with Freedom and a Democracy in which the peoples votes actually count. Hmmm...i wonder if one mans compassion is ever anothers hell.

You see, if you miss the mark with empathetic assesment then history suggests that your idea of showing compassion may be the last thing sombody wants or needs. I'm sure this next amazing human 'advancement' will be treated with a degree of scepticism by people such as the Native Americans and Australian Aboriginies.

Yes I think there should be a 'Capitalism with a Conscience' movement. In which it is still encouraged to make money and strive for as nice a lifestyle as possible, but not a the expense of social and human responsibility. ie the landlord who hikes up his rent until his tenant, a single mother and her little daughter can no longer afford it, so are then evicted from their home, he can be sued for this act of sociopathic heartlessness just to chase a fast buck.

Excellent!

I'd like to add something if I may.

I believe that our next advancement is the realization that we are all One, and as such treating each other following what we know as the Golden Rule and with compassion.

Service to self vs. service to others.

A lot of people already have come to this realization that this is the crux of ALL things human.

Does this make sense to all?

Compassion is basically an individual trait. We all have/use it to a degree, but I think many of you trick yourselves in thinking it is bigger or will be bigger than what it is. We show compassion for what is immediately in front of us and what personally affects us....that is about it, and I see very little changes to this.

Humans are not a nice species, we eat, kill, extinct anything we come in contact with. We need to maintain a level of threat over everyone's head in the form of laws so we do not do these same things to ourselves too. If you don't believe me go to a place like Darfur or a prison where laws are lacking...We are the Velociraptors of the mammal world and I would guess we need another 500k years to get better. There is a reason we are on top and it is not due to our compassion. Evolution is very slow process, we are but babies still and we have a long way to go if we do not destroy ourselves anytime soon, but I don't see compassion saving us from anything any time soon.

You know that evil alien race that goes out and conquers all, rapes, pillage and plunders whole worlds, enslaves and eats everything it can....you know the one we all fear that maybe out there lurking....Well my friends, you just need to look in the mirror to actually see one.

Hundreds of posts approving of the OP's message. But how many of you are actually going to practice this? One big reason why I stopped telling about spirituality and its concepts is that, even thought they aprove of what I tell 100%, they forget everything I said after 30 seconds.

The best way to spread a message is by practicing it.
