Why two arms, two legs, etc?

Why is it that most times 'Aliens' are 'encountered', they seem to be oddly human-looking; that is walking upright, two eyes, two legs, two arms etc, even of a similar size to us?

Is it really likely that life elsewhere would follow this pattern?

Isn't it just as likely that if Aliens are extra-terrestrial, they are likely to be completely different to us, say, for example, life on other planets may consist of a singular goo-like organism which envelops a whole planet?

The fact that 'witness' testimony describes broadly-similar-to-human Aliens troubles me.

Hmmm...

I dont know about arms and legs but to be able to create machinery and stuff they would need something very similar to our hands I would imagine.

I always felt insects were more perfectly evolved to survive any environment
.
I think that if Alien beings ever showed up here they would be more insect like. Maybe with an exoskeleton instead of a bone type set up like humans have.

two legs, 4 or 6 I don't know but I bet they are more like insects than humans....

The idea of human like physiology is there because we as humans are made up of the most common things in the universe. Element wise anyway.

So scientists have speculated that other species would be made, generally out of the same things, therefore having similar physiology or characteristics.

It's also IMO because our understanding of sentience, requires a brain and opposable thumbs in order to manipulate tools and various other things.

Now those are kind of false as they do not take into account mental abilities such as telekinesis.

Also another reason it's so common in science fiction is the need to personify ourselves in monsters who display human like traits.

That is a good question. You should really think about it. Why should evolution work almost exactly the same on worlds hundreds or thousands of light years apart? It doesn't make sense does it? So, what would make sense then?

Maybe if the aliens seeded this planet, that would explain the resemblance?

First,. there is an advantage to being upright on 2 legs and 2 legs and 2 arms provide balance and symmetry. Two eyes, two ears, two testicles or ovaries, etc. Second, there is the fibonacci relationship. Beyond the "golden mean" of body proportions everything is a probably a function of 1, 2, 3, or 5 (fibonacci series: 0,1,2,3,5,8,13,21....). IE, 1 head, 2 arms, 5 digits (fingers, toes) and 5 extruded body parts from the torso (head, arms, legs). Form follows function - it is nature's way.

There could be other elements that haven't been discovered

Well, that would still blow the darwinists out of the water, but it just pushes the problem back a bit. How many types of "aliens" are supposedly visiting us now? Small greys, large greys, nordics, reptilians, more? All upright and bipedal. So, who "seeded" all of them?

Right, but odds are, if we are made of the most common things in the Universe, as well as the most chemically active compounds, then life as it stands on Earth is far easier to imagine than life that come together with rare elements or "undiscovered" ones.

We are here as a result of complex chemistry ( albeit simple in comparison to what chemists can accomplish today or theorizing) with the mos common things found in our known universe.

It only makes sense that at least a large percentage of the probability that life exists elsewhere, would be based on that model of evolution.

First of all.....^^^^This.

Second of all, maybe the goo-like creatures from other planets are nothing more than a single-celled organism, like a bacteria, without the kind of intelligence that would be required to build the necessary spacecraft.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret: those grey aliens aren't bipedal. They are worms, like gigantic tapeworms, housed inside a bio-mimetic body, designed to look humanoid to make them appeal to humans. Think about a big squishy fleshy suit with touchpad controls on the inside. The worms wiggle, the suit moves, as muscles, and the alien walks. Hard to remember that after seeing them for so long, that those bodies, for the greys, are bio-suits.

It makes you think harder then, for all those discovered alien bodies, why they look so puppet like, are they really puppets, or actual bio-suits left behind by the worm creatures? Worms, the things that crawl on their bellies and eat the dust of the earth.

I think I should expand my reply with that not every alien I have ever seen has only been 2 arms, 2 legs, one head.

Some have tails. Some have four arms. Some have no legs, slug-like. Some have tails. Not all worms.

Don't forget the mantis aliens. Those are so weird. Giant bugs that can pick someone up and cut them in half, rip their spine right out their body.

It's because we all have the same creator and that is the way the Spiral works to create life. It's the template that is in place. The Golden ratio dictates all this. We see the pattern in galaxy or on the snails shell. We see it in leaves on a tree or on the bones of a human hand. I could go on and on. And when it comes to sentient life this is the pattern in place and the whole idea behind life created in the "image" of the Creator of the Universe.

Huh many people including myself have seen 7 or 8ft Insectoids that look just like giant praying mantis. Where these are coming from none knows for sure...But they are in the mix of Alien accounts.

That is very interesting can you tell us more about this or link us to some more information on this "worm" inside the greys. I knew they had stolen the genetic material to create the lifeforms they inhabit but I had never heard that inside they were actually a worm type being that's a new twist.

Because something like that would probably not be on a space craft abducting people without notice. A planet sized alien would be easily seen by all so you are not going to have people saying they met the bugger.

I've been coming to this site for 10 years and never posted. But i will today. I think the movie Dreamcatcher gave a good interpretation of what aliens could look like. Spielberg and all the big production names in holllywood do have some information on alien life. Also the aliens in Battle LA could be a good example.
