That is possible when the media attention dies down but what are they going to sue him for? His gold fillings?? He can't be making much beyond a pension and Social sec and they're SOL on collecting there, if one assumes for a moment he has the years left for them to run the process out that far. I'm hoping it's as this appears today and they leave well enough alone. Let an old guy do a GREAT deed and feel good about it, right? They can go sue a high school kid for an MP3 next week or something.

A star for your thoughts and thanks for stopping by! This is what I am worried about! I am hoping someone will see this post and contact Mr. Strachman so that he knows many of us are on his side and if he has a representative that they consider setting a donation fund for his defense if needed!!!! I hate to see Hollywood further disgrace themselves in this affair.

Please every reader, if you feel like I do please email a link for this post to people who would care and be outrage by this. I feel Mr. Strachman could use all the support he can receive after all he was in a war before most of us were created and our generation owes much to those who served in WWII. Mr. Strachman is still serving America and the free world by caring for our soldiers, we owe him to keep his 6 covered! IMHO again! Imagine if you got lucky to live through a war and at 92 still giving knowing the risk, this is what a Soldiers Medal is issued for heroism in peace time.

I only wish I could do more!

Thanks for everyone who stops by to read about Mr. Strachman

A commuted sentence to set an example to all file sharers old and young! I can see Hollywood's evil legal minds working find Mr. Strachman guilty to show all filesharers how without Ruth they are! If Hollywood was that ruthless imagine the fear they could spread in the pirate community! Thanks for your comment!

Just found this story Prolific DVD Bootlegger Is 92 Year-Old WWII Veteran

NY Times Outs 92 Year-Old DVD Bootlegger Who’s A Hero To Troops Overseas

I like the photo in this article!

Hi Hi - Sorry about the lack of link. When I went back in to add the picture I didn't realize I re-wrote over the link. I've asked a MOD to add it to the first page and just for you - here it is!

I think Big Hy will be just fine! Now that his story is out? I doubt the MPAA is going to go after him. Judging by what their spokesperson said in the article from the OP. He is 92-years-old? Moreover, he was doing it out of charity, and did not receive one dime for it. It would be a public relations disaster for Hollywood and MPAA. I hope this story goes viral!

Just imagine if there were DVD's during Mr. Strachman's era of WWII? There would be a crime wave of epic proportions of everyone and their mother burning DVD's to send over seas. I am not condoning his behavior or breaking the law, but I think the end justifies the means. If he could bring a little bit of home to soldiers, airmen, marines, and sailors enduring lengthy deployments and plenty of downtime? I am willing to look the other way in this instance. I hope the execs do the same? Furthermore, at his age what is the point of lengthy litigation caused by a lawsuit, and possible incarceration? Chances are he will be in the ground before any of it comes to pass. My hat is off to this man, and I feel honored to learn of his story. L'Chaim!

What I find disgusting is, why did the NYT give the man's name and approx where he lived? They could have just done a piece about an anonymous person giving movie DVD's to soldiers. And even taking his picture? They simply put a bulls-eye on him for the MPAA. Sure, the spokesman didn't say the studios would definitely go after him, but who thinks they won't think about it? They've tried suing grandmothers, people who don't even know how to use a computer, and even children. Probably all that would stop them is the PR disaster it would likely cause. I hope the MPAA leaves him alone. And good on him for doing this. He was supporting our troops and making their time a little better.

The rest of you can say, oh that's alright, they entertain, create jobs, etc..............BS

They do and if you're jealous because you're a idiot who never made something out of his life and has to struggle for money: Well, it's your own fault.
Everybody in todays world can make a lot of money.
Musicians create music, entertain people and they DO create jobs and if it's just because of their touring, the concerts, the need for roadies and other people to set up the stage etc.

I guess it's really just pure jealousy from those people who have nothing and look at them thinking "I never did anything worthwhile out of my life, i have nothing, i am nothing...why is that person so popular and rich"

Also this celebration of criminals around here is crazy. I wonder why the Censorcrew aka Moderators of ATS don't do something against it. They censor and close everything else that is against the rules. But stealing, copying and selling of Media is absolutely OK. Crazy.

Good thing this old bastard at 92 won't live very long

Different opinion. Stealing is going into a shop and taking product out under ones coat! IMHO that is! An example of thief is creating illegal wars and children loosing a parent in it whilst the rich make tons out of taxpayers money whilst making Americans abroad a target! Oh and being so rich their children don't serve, IMHO!

Thanks for dropping by!

Kinda pathetic that Hollyflop doesn't stream its refuse straight to serving troops.

They screen yet-to-be-released stuff on airlines. So, why not screen to those laying their lives down so the schlock the movie industry barfs up is afforded the freedom to be made in the first place?

NB:
Piracy is not "bad". Very few pirates are getting rich off of the backs of others' intellectual property. Most could never afford to pay for the material themselves. Some simply 'try' before they buy, and then you have examples like the topic of this thread here.

The "threat" of piracy is a crock concocted by rich media corporations in order to facilitate more systems of control being sidled into consumer products.

Right on with the right on! There was no money exchanged in fact Mr. Strachman paid for his computer Internet power ISP and spent time at his age in life, paid for boxes tape to seal boxes and postage. What a true hero asking nothing in return but hoping to entertain and destressed the troops! Star for you, thanks for stopping by!

The bulk of physical bootlegging as far as dvds goes is through care packages to the troops. I have sent external hard drives with terabites of tv shows and movies to my buddies over seas. It's common and unspoken of in the entertainment industry because it's unpopular to go after someone supporting the troops.

They are fully aware though and it bugs the hell out of them to no end but they also know it would be a PR nightmare and the masses would turn on there corporate asses in a second.

My cynicism is kicking in on this one. I'm sorry.

I wonder when he's going to get sued over this.

I'm reasonably certain it's in the works.

You hit the nail on the head!!!

Guess what kids... this is what is known as "Piracy". If the person doing this was 22 years old, this story would read much much differently.

Maybe people should think about this story when the next anti piracy bill comes up!

As a filmmaker, I think this is the only kind of bootlegging I'd ever support.

What a guy.

As an IT person, I understand the value of making backups of your data, and storing it at remote locations..
I'm sure that's all he was doing.
It just makes sense from a disaster recovery point of view.

Thank you for dropping by, Star for you. I don't understand why when Hollywood has made a fortune on war how they can turn their backs on our home team! Betcha they will make a movie from this story as well! Most us us understand about giving back. Guess this is the difference between us and the soulless corp out for all they can get! Nobody stole anything except perhaps the innocence of our young with these wars which has hurt so many families! Please think of our troops as your children and support them and those who risk everything too! God Bless Mr. Strachman and all those like him who work to give our people in uniform a break from their hell and remember while everyone is getting on with their lives our soldiers are Marching time in life!

God Bless please our troops!

Thank you and a star for you. Thank you for stopping by and supporting Mr. Strachman! I have been wounded been in military hospitals and VA hospitals. You know what I never thank the kind people who sent care packages so our long term soldiers have something to do. I will never forget the leather making kit I received nor the magazines which help me pass the time. Having to learn how to walk again is hard but having a donation from a member of public helps distract from the pain and anger. We do not give enough for our troops but Mr. Strachman did and I for one salute you Sir job well done!
