www.space.com...

I never get tired of seeing these flares they're just amazing to watch, makes earth seem so small in comparison to how much is out there. They said this area should be pointed at the earth in the coming days.

Those are some stunning images. The amount of energy is staggering.

Thanks for posting.

I was just looking at the Solar and Heliospheric website and what worries me about the current cycle is that all of these storms are occuring at a dangerous latitude on the Sun, relative to us. These storms are lined up with the Earth right now and there are more just around the corner.

Holy smokes that's a big one! I wonder if it's lonely being a big ole ball of fire in the darkness. I'd definitely make some noise.

What's funny, is that before we were able to image this, and have it released to the public... it still happened.

It's great. As long as it's not taken out of context. But I would bet by the end of this thread someone mentions 2012, a pole shift or the sun eating the Earth...

HA! Well this IS ATS right? Why wouldn't someone slide a conspiracy in here...

What if the "prepper" is right?

Great images.
The energy is immense.
But once it starts turning towards us, its going to shift our poles, and then gobble us up.
Its the end of the world folks, it is 2012 after all.
Maybe if we can track diwn and sacrifice a yeti, the martians will take pitty on us, and evacuate us to a pkanet thats hurtling through our solar system.......

Did I say great images?

Sweet a new picture to finally update my avatar with!

I am always impressed with the enormous amount of energy our Sun releases.
If we could only harness 1/100000th of that energy...

Great images thank you...
Now, I'm off to ragequit and make a new avatar!

It was an M1.7

You can read about that scale here.

Really impressive

anyone else notice at the end ofthe explosion, the ejected plasma looks like its getting sucked right back towards the sun?

what causes this?

I read this sentence and saw a flash into the future... you just never know.

I would like to think we could anyway....

Magnetic reconnection

An M1.7 flare is on the small end of the scale and had this been earth facing would not have affected us much at all.

X20 on up and then we may see some problems, power outages, satellite loss, etc.

So, as big as the prominence was compared to the earth, it's still tiny compared to what the sun has produced in the past.
