Huge Solar Prominence Erupts

I never get tired of seeing these flares they're just amazing to watch, makes earth seem so small in comparison to how much is out there. They said this area should be pointed at the earth in the coming days.

Those are some stunning images. The amount of energy is staggering.

I was just looking at the Solar and Heliospheric website and what worries me about the current cycle is that all of these storms are occuring at a dangerous latitude on the Sun, relative to us. These storms are lined up with the Earth right now and there are more just around the corner.

Great images.
The energy is immense.
But once it starts turning towards us, its going to shift our poles, and then gobble us up.
Its the end of the world folks, it is 2012 after all.
Maybe if we can track diwn and sacrifice a yeti, the martians will take pitty on us, and evacuate us to a pkanet thats hurtling through our solar system.......

Magnetic reconnection

An M1.7 flare is on the small end of the scale and had this been earth facing would not have affected us much at all.

X20 on up and then we may see some problems, power outages, satellite loss, etc.

So, as big as the prominence was compared to the earth, it's still tiny compared to what the sun has produced in the past.
