The U.S. military will move into insurgent-heavy "no-go zones" in Iraq to clear the way for legitimate elections in January, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday.

The plan would stabilize nation for January elections.

The Bush administration is hoping free elections will help stabilize the country and build a sense of legitimacy for the new government.

"Our goal is to move right through the fall season, improve security throughout the country, and have the elections as scheduled at the end of January of 2005," Powell said, appearing on CNN's "Late Edition."

"The major thrust of our political and military and diplomatic efforts over the next several months will be to make sure there are no no-go zones," he added. The "no-go zones" are largely avoided by U.S.-led forces.

Last week Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld commented, "Let's say you tried to have an election and you could have it in three-quarters or four-fifths of the country, but some places you couldn't because the violence was too great. Well, that's -- so be it. Nothing's perfect in life. So you have an election that's not quite perfect."

It is a guarentee that as the soldiers enter these "no-go" zones there will be bloodshed. It is good to see that the U.S. is looking out for the civilians, let's hope none get hurt.

Richard Armitage later said Iraq elections must be "open to all citizens" and that partial elections were not being considered.

Will the election be canceled because not everyone can vote? I hope so. These people deserve to vote, and to elect their new leader.

What better way to spark a civil war, than by having an election in which everyone doesn't have a chance to vote, thereby making the elected officials illegitimate in their eyes.

Rumsfeld, "So be it."

This might sound dumb, but what if our government does'nt like who they elect? Or do they already have "approved" candidates picked out?
Just curious.

My idea is that if they cant get these no-go zones safe, they chould hold an election for a temporary cantidate (6 months or so in office) so they can have more time to stop the violence in these areas. Just a thought...

I wonder how seriously the efforts will be take back these zones. Or will the "insurgents" simply run into the nearest mosque, which we will not touch.

Typically what happens with insurgents is they act like water to a ship. In this case the ship is the US military. When the military comes around they fire a few shots, then all the insurgents become civilians and when the ship goes away they fire a few parting shots and come back out and maintain control of the population.
