He like many considered he Austria to be a lost part of Germany. He goes over this in detail in Mein Kampf. When his army rolled into Austria unopposed people lined the streets to cheer them in. He was liberating them.
And this ludicrous stuff about his resentment about not being accepted into an art collage is just silly. I mean really? You think that is what drove him? Good grief.
