Hi ATS.

LOLZ.

Came across this article and thought i´d share with the ATS community.

Not only is popcorn a good way to relax, sit back and watch certain things unfold. (like certain thread on ATS
)

It's actually GOOD for you!

So sit back, grab some popcorn and read on

Popcorn: the snack with even higher antioxidant levels than fruits and vegetables

Popcorn's reputation as a snack food that's actually good for health has popped up a few notches with scientists reporting that it contains more of the healthful antioxidant substances called "polyphenols" than fruits and vegetables. They spoke at the 243rd National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society, being held here this week.

Joe Vinson, Ph.D., a pioneer in analyzing healthful components in chocolate, nuts and other common foods, explained that the polyphenols are more concentrated in popcorn, which averages only about 4 percent water, while polyphenols are diluted in the 90 percent water that makes up many fruits and vegetables

In another surprising finding, the researchers discovered that the hulls of the popcorn - the part that everyone hates for its tendency to get caught in the teeth - actually has the highest concentration of polyphenols and fiber.

enjoy your popcorn ATS!

ETA:

Like some posters pointed out already, a lot of corn is GMO.
Which is bad for you.

So make sure your popcorn is 'clean'

Plus, if you are diabetic, chances are you have some renal insufficiencies, so you need to watch your salt intake...

This has been your medical alert for the day....next question?

I LOVE popcorn. Except that I can't eat it anymore because of a medical condition. BOO. I used to eat it all the time.

and don't forget to pop it using 100% pure Coconut Oil.

You know - the stuff they told you 20 years ago would clog an artery each kernal you ate.

Turns out (surprise) that it's one of the healthiest oils you can use. It's also a natural oil - meaning NON-rancid.

Yea this came on the news about a week ago, they're saying it's really good and full of nutrition, but what they're forgetting is that it's also full of fat and sugar. Whenever you eat a lot of it you can feel the fat in your throat, also it makes you cough a lot. Other than that it's great for eating.
But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's trying to loose weight or stays away from greasy products.

As long as it's non-GM corn I say go ahead. Also, don't have it sweetened with HFCS and it should be fine.

funny that you mention coconut oil.

i recently started frying fries and snacks in that oil.

it's bloody delicious and healthier compared to other oils.

it can be heated to 220+ degrees without any harmful effects to the oil itself.

I love popcorn too, but I stay away from the microwavable stuff, not good for you. Most corn is GMO so I make sure to always have a large supply of organic, do it yourself, popcorn. You can add a little sugar or spice to the oil before popping and have a really tasty treat.

Popcorn popped in bacon grease is about the closest taste to heaven I have ever come lol

My parents used to make it a TON when I was a kid.

I remember those containers sitting in the fridge with all the bacon oil from breakfasts gone by...

ahh those were the days lol

I thought most of the corn now was GMO. Not sure I'd want to pop it.

Caramel corn....Not for the faint of heart.
10 lg. marshmallows
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. brown sugar
4 qt. popped corn

Pour the sticky stuff over the popcorn while the corn is hot or it may clump a little. Sometimes I sprinkle a little salt over the whole mess. Salty sweet. I'm hungry.

Yes! Coconut oil is a must. Makes the house smell like a movie theater.
Invest in one of those "whirly pop" pots you can stir as it pops. I imagine an electric popper with stirring mechanism would work.

Make sure it's "unrefined/extra virgin". Made the mistake of grabbing a refined jar. As bland as Crisco.

Popcorn popped in coconut oil with just a small drizzle of real butter. You can't get better than that! (Where's the little popcorn eating smiley guy?)

Just out of curiosity, where is everyone getting affordable amounts of coconut oil to deep fry or pop anything with. I use coconut oil and try to take 1 tbsp a day, and it costs 25 dollars roughly for a relatively small amount. If I used it in cooking it would be gone in a short period of time.

Here is a cheap source...just google it. You want to deal with a wholesaler if you can -- those who sell to movie theaters.

Full gallon for $17 bucks.

I do like caramel corn, but rarely do that. LOL. However, coconut oil would even be better, but corn oil OK too. However, I like butter, and olive oil. Sauteed up Hot Peppers and lots of their seeds everywhere, and then you douse the popcorn. Fire breathing dragon yummy!
