I said "celery" at first, then quickly changed it to "carrot" (because I was worried "celery" would sound dumb).

Yep, under control, all right!

Have you any idea why this characterization supposedly does not work on those whose first language is not English?

If this is not your answer, you are among 2% of people who have a different, if not 'abnormal,' mind.
98% of the folks would answer a red hammer while doing this exercise.
I thought about a purple wrench. *sees looks* I like purple ok!

Amazing. I thought red hammer, then scrolled down and saw red hammer. How is this possible? Amazing.

i thought peas, because my daughter always laughs when we say peas, (she's 4)

then i thought yellow hammer, but "saw" the color red in my head, how weird is that ?

what i noticed is how many people changed their answer, like we are all conditioned at an early age to have the right answer, even for these types of questions.....

Ok i guess I have really lost it then, because I answerd first test with broccoli and the second test with a silver wrench. In reality people Im glad Im not the norm, because this means nobody can dictate my thought process but me..

Just my thoughts

I think the paper also gave a possible explanation for the carrot.
The carrot was possibly the first vegetable name you were able to memorize as a child thanks to BUGS BUNNY. When u think about it hes almost always got a carrot sometime in each show thats also possibly why the question only applies to mainly english speaking people too.

I will try and do the same test with my friends but different number instead of 6 and will post the results.

Cute tests...

The first one I didn't even picture a vegatable, I thought of an ORANGE...

On the second I thought of a PURPLE STAPLEGUN. Wonder what that means?

I said carrot...

I think it might be a psycholinguistic pattern problem. Thinking 6 sends the signals to the mouth to form the sounds necessary to say it whether you do or not. The word six has the same hard consonant as the beginning of the word carrot, and prepares the mouth and the mind to use that particular sound. And it would make it mostly an English thing that way.

The people who don't come up with carrot are probably people who for whatever reason have chosen a favorite vegetable, or eat a particular vegetable much more often than carrots. Or, in the case of potato, they are Irish. They have potato in their DNA.

If it were a control issue, I might guess that it had something to do with the Bugs Bunny/Satan connection that no one can deny...
