Millions Blocked from Voting in U.S. Election

By Alan Elsner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Millions of U.S. citizens, including a disproportionate number of black voters, will be blocked from voting in the Nov. 2 presidential election because of legal barriers, faulty procedures or dirty tricks, according to civil rights and legal experts.

I predict a repeat of last election. Maybe we should all check to make sure we are still eligable to vote.

The Governments oversea's website has blocked access from... oversea's voters.

Yes, thats right folks, those who wanted to register online are unable to reach the website because the pentagon has blocked 90% of international internet service providers.

The excuse? Hacking attempts. Hah.

They do this # in our face and then expect no one to say anything...and ya know what - despite a few people here and there who aren't being taken seriously - it's working!

I despise these ignorant slobs we call "elected officials"...

and there is absolutely positively zero we can do about it. I am convinced our votes do not count. If you are a lucky one that can register, you will be lucky to get your vote to actually count.

In a mayoral election in Philadelphia last year, people pretending to be plainclothes police officers stood outside some polling stations asking people to identify themselves. There have also been reports of mysterious people videotaping people waiting in line to vote in black neighborhoods.

And this is legal why?

Though I don't agree with it at all...

Overseas voters can still vote via mail, just as always... I'm assuming though, that the Bush camp is betting on sheer laziness, as they know there aren't many overseas who'd vote for him....

As for the mysterious people voting in black neighborhoods, last I checked, you still need to present your voter ID, etc. to vote, so they would have had to forge this. Unfortunately, this seems to be a relatively simple thing to do.... As for asking me for my name, etc. they better show a badge first...

And what the hell does being a convicted felon have to do with being black? Or not having a photo id? Sure you can argue statistics, but the white felons, etc. are in the same boat. Personally, I think we should be showing ID along with the card, to prove we are who we say we are, or make the voter card have a photo on it. But, currently, it isn't the law, so anyone who isn't a first time voter should refuse such a request, and they'd be protected by law.

I think that's the point-- many request absentee ballots via the web/e-mail and/or rely on the Internet to obtain deadline or mailing info. Without access to the websites, it discourages voting.

In NYC, I don't have to present my voter ID nor present any ID. I have just have to sign in next to the signature I provided when I registered to vote.

In the recent FL elections I had lost my wallet a couple days before voting - which had my Voter ID in it...all they needed at the voting location though was my driver's license - the people coming up to me were being asked for the same thing...

I give them my license and in return they give me a ballot...not until I was at the voting booth did I stop and realize that they had given me a republican ballot...it then took about 5 minutes for me to explain my situation to the people there that I was not born in '54 but in '82...
- I spent more time proving my party affiliation to these people than my identification!!

They had confused me with my father, who I'm only guessing must have gotten my dem ballot since he came and voted before me...

The FL elections are still botched...the damn people volunteering for these jobs are incompetent and I would not be surprised if we DO see a repeat...

No doubt in a month or two there'll be a scandle about dead voters and canceled votes all over again.

The whole American presidential race is a joke from the ground up. I don't see the reasoning behind the huge conferences and billion dollar campaings when you're just going to end up with a war crazed, gun toting yankee moron in the oval office either way. Can i just ask if it's ACTUALLY all taken seriously?

Why are the voting booths usually in Christian churches????

I am from Ohio, and in every town around me, we go to Churches to vote???

I think churches are used because they are spaced out well enough in every community and they have good space. There just isn't enough public/government places and you definitly do not want everyone from one city going to the same place to try to vote. The last place I voted at used an elementary school gym. I live in Columbus now. I haven't figured out exactly where I vote this time, but I do think it is a church down the road from where I currently live.

The problem with voting is that we live in a complicated paper age. Computers are great, but they are still vulnerable to errors, crashes, viruses and hackers. Voting organizers are usually untrained volunteers so it isnt surprising that paper votes are lost or tampered with. There is always going to be a margin of error because nothing is perfect.

I am in Ohio also but this will be the first time voting in this state, if I decide to vote. Last time I voted was in New York, Long Island to be exact. We voted in elementary schools. HOw do they work the vote here? Is it punch cards, paper ballets or machines? I heard a while ago they were going to be using the new Diebold computer voting machines. If the latter is the case beware, there are a lot of people saying they are extremely vulnarable(sp?) to hacks and easily changed.

If you don't mind me asking, what part of ohio? you do not have to give a town. I am in west central ohio.

I predict a repeat also and here it is:
There will be a crybaby Democrat trying to steal the election by claiming that he's knows without a doubt that the American people want him as president. He'll also claim that the election was rigged!
Kerry, take a loss and go back to Massachusetts where you're wanted or do they really want you there!
Take a look and see who was the clear winner in 2000!

Wah! Wah! Wah! Wah! I don't want to hear it! This election year will clearly be a waste of time trying to unseat Bush! Wah! Wah! Wah! Wah!

Intelearthling, you really do not need to bash dems or any other party. That is not what this post is about. Nobody is saying that bush is responsible or gore is. We are talking about missing votes. I personally have my theries but I at the current time am not into talking about them.

Like I stated before that you needed to quote me on I do think this election will be similar to the last presidential election. Especially when you look at all the problems there have been in all elections since. Especially in florida. Now I am not blaming anybody or saying wah, wah, I am bigger than that. There is a problem with the system that needs to be fixed. Especially since what is being revealed in the article I posted which was pulled from yahoo or Reuters.

This is why Bill Cosby is kicking the black community in the butt. If you want to vote don't commit felonies. If you do, don't cry racism because you're convicted. I know that may seem like a lot to ask, but really.

Overseas voters are composed of a lot of military. These votes trend towards Republicans for obvious reasons. Not exactly a "vast right wing conspiracy" here.

Edit: changed censored word.

I never done one of those. Atleast not that I am aware of. What is the process for them?

Nice, I did a land survey for a burger king out there back in 2000. I can't remember the location though. My wife also has a cousin that lives there. I just moved from westerville to mechanicsburg.

So what did Bush do to cause ALGORE to get defeated in his home state of Tennessee? Florida did not cause ALGORE to lose, Tennessee did!

I see this election going to Bush and it won't be close. What will the democrats excuse be then?

Civil Rights leaders will always complain about something. That is how they get paid. Maybe they are supporting the wrong party. They have supported the dems for so long and they still feel they are getting robbed, maybe it is time for them to change parties.

It is perfectly legal to videotape on public grounds. Next time you go on the road you will notice cameras for traffic and security, and it is perfectly legal.

Let me guess, this isnt a problem, untill you or your affiliated party is directly effected by it.
