Teen Forced To Marry Her Rapist Kills Herself

news.sky.com

The suicide of a 16-year-old Moroccan girl who was forced to marry her rapist has provoked outrage from local human rights groups and across the internet.

An online petition, a Facebook page and Twitter users all called for changes to the country's laws after Amina Filali swallowed rat poison on Saturday to protest against her marriage to the man who assaulted her a year earlier.

Wow! just wow!. Words fail me. What kind of civilisation forces a victim to marry her rapist!? Since when did 'public morality' become more important than the rights of the victim? Hard to believe there are still places within human society where things like this are still allowed to happen. What has this world turned into?

Actually, disgraces such as this has never gone away. Things like this has happened as long as there has been humans. This is not something that has just started occurring.

Campaigners are also calling for the judge who allowed the marriage and the rapist to be jailed.

Now we're talking.

Then there's the father.

Culture is no excuse for barbarity. Morocco: infamy and shame are yours to the uttermost. The world watches to see your remorse and hopes that this will never again be permitted.

So if the guy can escape jailtime because he marries the girl, now that she is dead he is liable for punishment for the original crime no?

Which the article states is 10-20 years in bars.

Perhaps that is what the young girl wanted. In the most unfortunate circumstances possible.

What has this world turned into?

A better question would be, "Has the world not changed in the last 1000 years? Have we not mentally evolved beyond the point of obeying the law of the "Invisible Sky King"? "

But I agree with you, this is sick. I knew stuff like this went down but after seeing the title of this thread and reading the article reality just gave me a swift kick in the behind.

I feel so bad for these women in these countries who probably fear on a daily bases that this will happened to them.

Very true but it would be nice to think that modern society had removed some of the ignorance and savagery and possibly instilled some common sense. I just find it hard to believe that anybody, anywhere could truly say this was the right thing to do! Moroccan society had instilled these beliefs so well that even her parents went along with this!! So wrong, just so wrong...

I'm sure it's pure coincidence that Morocco is one of the most steadfast allies to the United States outside of Europe proper and the NATO nations. One of the few remaining, I might add.

Forced marriage is an evil concept and horrible practice...and it's widely practiced in large areas of the world. Why this one, in this place...at this moment in time for a major media/internet focus? Of course...the geopolitical elephant is of no matter. Err...

Agreed! Both parents, the rapist and the judge should be jailed. 'Amina complained to her mother that her husband was beating her repeatedly during the five months of marriage, but that her mother urged her to be patient' Source: Sky News article

Although since a lot of countries like this seem to like biblical punishments so much maybe the rapist should be stoned, crucified... or possibly even raped himself then forced to marry his attacker!

What kind of a civilization encourages the sexualization of toddlers? Or pays athletes millions while children starve?

My point is not to say that I agree with forcing someone to marry their rapist. My point is that when you take off the blinders of culture we do a lot of things that are completely messed up as well. And if we want others to "fix" whats wrong with their cultures we had better be prepared to look at ourselves in the mirror and fix whats wrong with ours.

He bloody should be locked up for it!

What a tragic way to get justice. I hope her death is not in vain.

This is the mind set of that culture,it goes along with if a girl is raped , then she must have done something to entice the man or he wouldn't have done it to begin with. The problem with that type of culture is the man NEVER bares any responsibility for his actions. He is allowed to do whatever he so chooses and the women of that society have to pay the price for it. And of course since its the men in power to begin with, don't think that they will be changing the laws to hold them accountable anytime soon.I didn't believe this until I met some Saudi Arabians and talked with them about their culture and beliefs.I was shocked that people still acted this way,but they assured me that they firmly believe this is the only way to protect they're 'honor'.

Ha! also agreed, Your absolutely right that this sort of thing goes on day in day out all over the world. I think politics (and maybe to a lesser degree social networking) has everything to do with this being publicised.

No sympathy from me.
If the girl thought about it, she should have killed her new hubby.
There are many ways to go about dispatching sleeping scumbags.
But, for one reason or another, she killed herself.

Also agreed! I think the 'little princess' pageants (or whatever they are called) are disgusting, as are athlete's being paid millions while millions are left to starve.

I don't think that will ever happen, the individual human has enough problems looking in the mirror and facing reality. There's no chance society as a whole will ever do it.

Hmmm I sincerely hope that neither you, your family of friends are ever put in this situation, Although maybe it would cause you to re-think your attitude towards this.

Well, for one reason she was a kid and they probably would have sentenced her to death for that. Hardly fair - as a 15 year old get raped - get forced to marry your attacker - kill your attacker after 6 months of abuse (probably including spousal rape) - get sentenced to death.

Nope, I'd do it just like I said.
If the girl got sentanced, she'd still have the satisfaction of knowing said dirtbag would never do that to another EVER.
If I am going to die, I might as well do a good for humanity, right?

As is stated somewhere, by someone (I really cannot remember or I would give credit) "change begins within".
