Not sure if this is metaphysical or religion ...

I've been googling and reading, but I'd like a few things explained to me in easy to understand terms by those ATSers who are familiar with chalkras and all that go with them. Others may also be interested, so I'm starting a thread on the subject. Anyone with experience or knowledge ... please answer my questions and also share you knowledge of this subject and your experiences ...

- What exactly is a chakra? What does it do? (if anything)
- There are 7 of them, right? Crown, Brow, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexis, Spleen, Root.
- Are there specific colors to a healthy chakra at each point, or do the colors change?
- Do chakras get 'sick' or somehow not do what they are supposed to be doing?
- Can you feel if your chakra is healthy or having a problem?
- Does meditation/prayer change chakras?
- I have heard people speak of 'opening chakras'. What exactly is this?
- How are chakras opened? Can you feel if you have opened your chakra?
- Is opening a chakra good or bad? If bad .. how do you close it?
- What is the difference between having an open vs closed chakra?
- If it's a good thing to open chakras ... is there an order to opening them or does it depend on the person?

I'm reading up on chakras and am trying to understand them. Thanks ahead of time for anyone who can answer these questions and to those who share their information/experiences.

A chakra is an energy point in the body, which begins at the base of the spine and continues up to the crown of your head. These areas are thought to be nerve centers, which when properly harmonized will allow you to be more complete and in balance – spiritually and physically.

There are seven chakras according to tradition, which you have listed accurately above – the “brow” chakra being the third eye that communicates divine information from the crown chakra into physical information.

Each chakra is thought to have a certain color – this information is abundantly available via a google search. The intensity of the color depends, accord to traditional thought, on how balanced each chakra is, or how blocked it is.

Chakras are thought to be blocked, or energy stifled, depending on the flow of your life. This could be called “sick,” although I feel that is a bad word. Blocked is better. Each chakra relates to a certain aspect of your life – the root chakra being sexual urges, etc. You can see this reflected in your emotional and physical status; which is how you may know if they are healthy or not.

Meditation and prayer does help chakras – as all thought patterns influence your body.

To open a chakra, means to feed it more energy. There are many modes of thought on this. Much to many to discuss here. Please google how to open a chakra. There is a vast amount of information. You will know if it’s opened, again, by your emotional state and physical state.

Opening a chakra is neither good nor bad, but how you use it defines that.

Closed chakras block energy flow, resulting in a negative emotional or physical state – depending on what chakra it relates to.

The chain of opening chakras is also widely debated. Most suggest starting with the root chakra, or the base of the spine, and working up.

wow! it would take me to write abook on this subject! i dont think ats would like that!!!
opening a chakra is not a bad thing, its controlling it that takes practice! most people stop at the loins, cause they like the sex!!! your gut will tell you how healthy you are and is good for intuition.your heart is one of the hardest to deal with because of emotions most people cant deal with.after the heart, your throught becomes alive and will get you in alot of trouble with people that dont know! you'll start speaking from your heart! next is your 3rd eye which is hard to get to,diet, excersise, and meditation is the key.this will show you god.the crown is the god head, and you will know god! this is the hardest thing ever to achieve. you will be like buddah,or jesus. fasting and constant prayer are needed .this takes a lot of time to master, and i will not pretend that i have done it! ive passed out from lack of food because of this!
i have gotten to my throught chakra and seen what is in my minds eye and it aint always pretty. as for the crown, well im a long way off!
good luck on your quest. look into kabbala and the tree of life,it may help

hey from what ive read, the chakras are always 'moving' or 'spinning', it is just how much they are doing so, and they don't stop unless your body is dead. 'opening' them just means making them more 'active' and 'closing' = slowing down, which just happens naturally after an hour or two(or whatever, maybe it depends how fast you got them going). thinking about or visualising the chakra closing or slowing will just bring attention to that area and make it go faster.

Anyway that is not my personal experience, just what i remember half correctly from some book that sounded like it knew what it was talking about.

I don't believe in chakras. I believe there might be physiological explanations for some of them (like the third eye), but I don't think there is actually a spinning energy orb. I do believe we are light though.

You can use the pendulum technique to check the status of your chakras. Hold the pendulum still over the location of a chakra. The pendulum will pick up the energy of the spinning chakra, and the orbit it takes will indicate whether your chakra is in a healthy state or not. Clockwise is normal and regular and the energy center is flowing well, but if it is going counterclockwise then there is a problem with the energy associated with that chakra, which also will be manifesting on the physical, mental and emotional levels. Sometimes elliptical orbits are picked up, and these are okay but starting to spin out of balance. Barbara Brennan wrote about chakras extensively in her books Hands of Light, and if you run across a copy you may want to check it out.

How can you tell if the chakra is open or closed or blocked?
Can you feel the chakra when it is open/closed .. what does it feel like?
What can you do to help open the channels?

Great thread, I will leave the answers to the masses who will undoubtedly rush in to school you.

One thing to add is that each Chakra system is complete within itself.

In other words if you are looking at them from the perspective of 7 main Chakras, then each seven has 7 levels to complete.

There is no higher or lower. Once the base is completely opened the others, well you will find out...

There is 2 ways to connect Thru Crown Chakra that I know of. 1 There are those that have the moment of clarity that give you an wideopened (or close to it) crown chakra and if you have that then you should probably open chakra from the crown down since the enegy from the crown will push downwards. 2 Then there are those who work for years and get to the same result chakrawise. I think there is a difference in the mind between the 2. In 1 the person is taken for a ride that is lifechanging and can be very mentaly draining and their mind can have a hard time couping. In the 2nd way the mind have more time and is gently awakeened to reality. Those who have not had the moment maybe should go the oposite way from below to crown. A video explaining the harmony and bliss in the brain in the people who have the moment or wake up slowly. vimeo.com...

The chakra regelates energy called chi or by the Christians Mana from heaven (or light). It is the connection to god/everything. From my point of view it is when you enter heaven (to be one with god/all/everything). It is a gentle thing and you can still be angry/upset and you are very questioning of things. The chi is a physical thing. You feel more alive with it and you sense of taste and touch is so much more. I can understand people thinking there are angels are near them because it can feel like something is caressing gently you on the head. The energy can be felt ath the start when you have happy thoughts and push from the top of the nose around the top of your head (to the ears) and to you neck. When it is intesified on the top of your nose it is really annoying. It is like someone pinching you lightly. Being enlightened to me means that you have turned on the flow of light. It do not say that your mind is healthy or that you are devine. You are healing and is opening up to teaching and working on your spiritual growth. Enlightment is not the end. It is a rebirth/new beginning.

From my point of view I became more emotional after getting the rebirth. It either perfect/happy or crap/idiotic. I am not as careful and gentle in my opinion as I was before and sometimes I am itching for a fight but making sure at the same time to not do anything hasty. So you can have outburst of anger but a few seconds later you forgett it totaly and cannot stop smilling. You have a very hard time being anything except natural and keeping up masks is not possible for me anymore. Your mind can still be an asshole and think thoughts that are not nice and be judgemental. But you cannot get rid of the smile and laught all the time. You become one of the Shinny Happy People.

My third eye opened without meditation but the rest I had to open with meditive sounds. I am not much for sitting still long time so I listened to meditation videos lying down. www.youtube.com... is the crown video and the 6 others that worked for me so energy flowed to the rest of the body and not only the head. I think I am a sound oriented person so singing or hearing specific notes do something in me. Especially things that seem to resonate inside my head seem to work for me.

The third eye bring synchonisation to a degree that is astounding. What it means for you is for you to decide but I know what it means for me.

Above are what I belive and have found out on my journey but do not let my experiance hinder you because you might find a better explanation than I do or a faster way to grow. But whatever you do please grow/evolve.

How are chakras opened? Can you feel if you have opened your chakra?

You can open your chakra by becoming aware of it. Concentrate of the area and you feel feel like a tingle sensatoin. After a while you can feel it turning and if you turn more than one you can let a strong feeling between the two points.. Like vibration or sound or something.. It feels nice too...

I might be all in the head/brain yes but that do not mean the way to open them is wrong and that they do not exists. I do feel nerves in even the lower chakras that I have found on the net but that do not mean it is not the brain firing impules so I feel it in my body. It does not really matter if they are around the body or just in the brain to me. But If you ever get an answer tell me. If someone can be more specific and research/prove it in a better way then that would be nice. At least to the people who do not get it and is missing out on the bliss/harmony if they are intrested in it.

One question before i get into this thread...

I thought you were Catholic? This line of thinking is not part of your religion, and some might even call it Against your religion.

Why are you interested in Chakras?

They are very real, and you don't even have to "believe" in them as one poster replied.... some things are true regardless of belief...

And by the way, Jesus understood the idea behind the chakras... just another reason to believe he traveled to india in his lifetime...

Gee, you have to realize it is irrelevant if chakras exist or not. They do exist because when people meditate, they can feel the energy and pulsing sensation in the chakra region or energy points. Just because you are low on your spiritual energy or haven't have your Kundalini risen up, it does not mean they don't exist.
Some people need to give it up on the notion of proofs. You have to admit that if you don't have the necessary spiritual and consciousness fortitude, these energy points would mean ZERO to you. You would feel nothing.

FYI, when my chakras are opened, they cause snapping or clicking sounds in my room. If you follow the Taoist meditation principle, there are actually 9 major energy points--navel area, anus area, tail bone area, lower back area opposite of your navel region, back of your head area, the crown, third eye, the throat, and the heart.

You can prove their existance to yourself...

IF you've ever practiced meditation... try to focus on one of the chakras while meditating.

With a little practice, you can feel them.... especially the crown chakra... I love it. Its said the crown is your connection with God... And if you focus on it... it litterally feels like you're wareing a hat.

You mean the Catholic faith? That is correct, the Catholics don't want people messing with Chakras. The Catholics do not believe in reincarnation either. BUT I DO.

Why are you interested in Chakras?

For some reason they have come up repeatedly in the past week or two ... so I'm taking it as a 'hint' from someone or something that I should read up on them and learn about them. I try to pay attention to those kinds of things when they happen ....

AHA!!! I'm so glad you said that. That was what I was wondering about. When I've been in prayer/meditation it feels like a hat but also like when your foot falls asleep ... like a tingly hat. Is that a chakra?? Does that mean it's open? Or is that something else? What do the others feel like??

Ahh i see LOL...

Alright well... Yes that tingling / buzzing whatever you call it... on the top of your head is your crown Chakra.

The one issue i have with many of these teachings is when people start talking about open/closed chakra... I don't believe they open or close. They're vibrations that are always there, but sometimes they're stronger and very noticeable.

Focusing on your chakra points has a way of uniteing you with the universe so to speak... Its a connection with the spiritual... You'll find after practicing chakra meditation, things seem to come to you with ease... answers about things... Its not easy to explain... but it is "enlightening" to say the least.

I find theres times where im writing a reply here, or even reading certian scripture, and my third eye chakra is just buzzing away... You'll feel that one just above your eyes between your brow, and it feels like the shape of an eye....

Take a look at this... it will help you... and theres tons of info on the web about Chakras as well...

I feel it more like something is caressing my head except when it pinches the top of my nose. But I could also describe it as sunlight on your head in a gentle brezee at times. I tried concentrating on my lower chakras but my mind is kinda annoyingly curious and wont stay still and begin to wander. Meditiation sound worked better for me since it even relaxes my mind. I do not meditate anymore now because I do not have the urge to do it. Before I felt it was very important to me. Now I just sing instead. Mostly wierd opera with tunes and words that makes no sense but wants to come out from within. I think it is just my unconcious playing around with creative power. Singing tones that echoes inside your head is really fun with the crown chakra. Like AUM in Hinduism.

The proving above was more like science finally proving chakra and chi by measuring it and conclusevly proving it and telling everybody it is real in all newspaper and television, so that people would at least start their evolving. Bah more syncronicity. The 11:s got me good.

Too much reading of the subject won't do you good if you can't relate what your read to what you are experiencing. So, go start with yoga or chakra or Zen meditation.
