More likely to have been there for decades but was only discovered overnight.

Likely they twisted off the bit or drilling collar and abandoned the hole. Happens all the time. I spent part of my misspent youth as a Roughneck. No casing so it was abandoned for some reason mid-hole.

Who would think you could find metal in the ground? That stuff only comes from the sky. He might have found a whole new industry of digging and pulling metal out of the ground. Might help start putting people back to work. Seriously though... it looks like a well of some type and there probably a drill bit in there or something fell down the hole and got stuck.

When you twist off a bit or drilling collar, unless you can catch it while "fishing", you abandon the hole.

Once while "fishing" for a bit that twisted off at over 5,000 feet with a new tool our Driller came up with, we caught the bit first try. Within an hour or so the CEO showed up from Denver on a helicopter, handed us little rolls of hundred dollar bills and gave us the next day off. Then they gave our Driller the money to take us all out for a meal on him and an evening of partying. Catching it saved them huge sums of money.

And i am always intrigued by the fact that they always have a checkered shirt, basball cap and are unshaven.this guy however was kind of prepared he had a magnet and some string in his pocket in the event that he stumbled upon a suspicious hole in the ground, which now turns out to be a previous oil drilling venture, strange that he did not notice the rig there as it apparently is close to his abode, in searching distance for said cat.

Maybe I'm confused, but didn't "cbskywarn" resolved this mystery on the first page?????

According to his source this is an abandoned oil well hole.

It is a theory offered with a bad translation and it may very well be correct (the pictures certainly provide a tantalising piece of evidence). However, unless i am mistaken (in which case i apologise) this has not actually been verified by other sources - as such it is as unsubstantiated as saying it is a spaceship or a underground bunker of Nazi loot or even where Elvis has been hiding. Corroboration is needed before it is conclusively debunked.

Yes, you are right. I did check and I did not find any other information either. However, the article which states this to be a well bore hole seems to be legitimate. Thank you for bring to my attention that I must be a little less hasty to debunk others therories without more proof.

Hey sorry, it wasn't meant as a criticism - debunk away!

Just mean in this particular case maybe we should hang fire for a little bit for further info before we endorse or rubbish it.

I have to say though, the evidence in the picture does paint a pretty convincing picture for old oil well.

No worries. I just happened upon this thread and thought it was odd that no one addressed the comments about a possible explaination to the hole. The original article had more information in it that others seemed to not be paying attention to. When I checked it out myself I found the other article and it just seemed to explain the mystery.
Now, I'm off to check on Japan. Lets hope this isn't a precurser to another big one.

Has anyone heard any sort of update about what was actually found? I remember when this happened but can't seem to find anything online about what was actually in the hole (hopefully not the cat).

Anyone?
