since I didnt happen to notice mention of something flying first, or the sound of a thump that coulld indicate an impact.. Im suggesting someone knew this was a somewhat open field, and began building a bunker, unbeknownst to the farmer. He probably hasnt come forward because perhaps he is scared of getting charges for a crime.. ? I dont know.. Crazy story

It's a old water well shaft with the old well head in place that has been abandoned . The earth plug just came loose and opened up to the world.

if there is no clear evidence it was once a oil well drill hole


i would suggest that someone to conduct a dowsing rod thing... ~"witch"~ a grid area around the hole to figure out just how big the thing is down there or if it is perhaps a air shaft for a mining operation that was once in use,


if the dowsing results in a round structure down there... then bring in the expensive equipment to side scan
the object before excavation...

Back to the OP the old well thing does seem to fit.

It is buried in a field in Austria. Secret Nazi technology clearly! Or bunker full of looted Nazi treasure - silly man will be regretting drawing attention to it when he finally gets into it!

Your avatar freaks the hell out of me everytime I see it. I absolutely hated that movie, especially that scene.

It could be an old well rediscovered with maybe some centuries old farming equipment fallen down there, etc a wheelbarrow.
But it is questionable since the villagers stated that it has only appeared overnight, so I'm sure these people would know there village like the back of their hand.

The only plausible thing I can then think of is that some of the ground gave way during the night to reveal an old well?

Sorry, couldn't resist. I am interested in this but it is rather hard to keep it serious with the smattering of knowledge that we have. I for one am hoping that this is looked into further, even if it turns out to be nothing at all.
