I would have to disagree, coils are conductors.... geomagnetically induced currents can flow through coils, the only reason they say long wires etc. is because it covers more surface area, more ground conduction etc.

Why do so many of the posts here on ATS and Headlines in the news media give the impression that something dire is about to occur, but end up using words like perhaps, could be, possibly, potentially, etc.. ad nauseum?

I suppose it's like the lottery and casino. Lots of suckers, but very few winners. Eventually, for some generation in the future, we'll have a winner in the doomsday, or serious interruption of life predictions as well. Thankfully, most, or none of us, will no longer be here to see it occur.

EDIT TO ADD:
I just found a listing of past Solar Flares. The biggest to affect earth was a catagory X-45..which is HUGE. This X-5 coming our way is babysnot by comparison. Link to listing: en.wikipedia.org...

My prediction.... This is just a pre-cursor of what will come later this year, maybe in a couple weeks, maybe months. As far as what will happen, no one knows!!! I'm guessing just cell phone disruption, and a few cities with out power....

like you say, the EM field induced by the solar storm, might be 0.0005W/m^2. If you have a coil, that is concentrated in an area of 1cm^2, what is the percentage of the the wattage/m^2 that falls into the area of your coil?

Also, look at the power/m^2. We are talking about microwatts.

If you compare coils to long wire antennas, you can't. Electrically they might be the same, i.e. same impedance, etc, but physically they are not. You can test it for yourself, calculate the amount of turns you need to make a coil with a specific impedance for a specific frequency, and make one. Now do the same for a long wire antenna, and build one. Now measure the signal being picked up by both. Even though electrically they are the same, you will find that physically they are not. That is just physics, simple as that. Have you ever wondered why a loaded whip is so much less efficient than a dipole antenna with the same electrical impedance?

to give you a hint, just think about the term "Radiation resistance", amongst others...

Solar storm headed toward Earth may disrupt power

front page of The drudge report.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The largest solar storm in five years is racing toward Earth, threatening to unleash a torrent of charged particles that could disrupt power grids, GPS and airplane flights. The sun erupted Tuesday evening, and the effects should start smacking Earth between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. EST Thursday (0600 GMT and 1000 GMT), according to forecasters at the U.S. government's Space Weather Prediction Center. They say the storm, which started with a massive solar flare, is growing as it speeds outward from the sun.

SO, now it looks like we have the BEST times to turn our electronics off......."just in case" Vancouver looks like Thursday morning between 6 and 10. Now I won't have internet till 10, should I turn it back on after 10:00 or wait for a bit. Like noon or something?

The BBC have posted an update within the last 45 mins

BBC

A strong solar storm is expected to hit Earth shortly, and experts warn it could disrupt power grids, satellite navigations systems and plane routes. The storm - the largest in five years - will unleash a torrent of charged particles between 06:00 GMT and 10:00 GMT, US weather specialists say

So just under 6 hours until it is due to hit us.

"It's hitting us right in the nose," said Joseph Kunches, an expert at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa). He described the storm as the Sun's version of Super Tuesday - in a reference to the US Republican primaries and caucuses in 10 states. "Space weather has gotten very interesting over the past 24 hours," Mr Kunches added. The charged particles are expected to hit Earth at 4,000,000 mph (6,400,000 km/h), and Noaa predicts the storm will last until Friday morning.

I saw something about this posted on Facebook and assumed it would be a small solar storm and nothing would come of it.

So I decided to see what ATS has to say, And now I can safely say I am worried!

Hopefully it won't be as bad as it looks to me, I personally know nothing about solar storms but looking at the posts/videos of it on here it look's HUGE!

I hope nothing serious comes of it.

lol, wayyyyyyyyyyy past bedtime in this part of the world. Will see later today who were correct, the Doomsayers, or the few others.....

Guess we will all be here, and the doomsayers will be looking for the next big doomsday event

Where does one go to see the recorded history of big flares? I saw the aurora in the 70's on my roof top in Milwaukee one night way back. It was big! You could see the "eye" where I think, the particles are entering the north pole. Only green colors, no others. It was spectacular!

A few micro watts per square meter can wreak havoc on electronics, what I'm saying is yes...geomagnetically induced currents can flow through coils. No need for cb antenna math lol. speaking of, you can over load a receiver with out an antenna...

I'm in North Battleford, Saskatchewan where we get some really awesome auroras and I can hardly wait !! Maybe I will finally hear those crazy sounds that everyone has been talking about because I think they are caused by geomagnetism. If I hear anything...I'll let you all know.

Oh yeah...and here is a link to Auroramax; if the sky is clear, have a look tonight and especially tomorrow night.

You never heard the term "if it bleeds, it leads?" C'mon, exciting, lurid headlines are the bread & butter of the media since it's very inception. They want you to buy their paper, read their article, click on their link, etc. You act like this is a new thing.

Can anyone with some real knowledge on this subject please let me know why this seems like a new phenomenon? Flares were never in the news now they seem to be such a big topic. Just more end of the world propaganda?

Im 37 and have never heard anything about solar flares until a few years ago but I'm assuming flares happen all of the time, no?

It's easy... never before have we, as a society, been so utterly dependent on electronics, computers, satellites and satellite communications. Massive solar storms can wreak havoc on these systems. And while the earth is shielded to a degree, our birds in the sky are shielded to an even lesser degree, highly vulnerable, and would take years to fully replace if they all (or many) wound up dead. In the meantime, our communications infrastructure backbone is build on satellite communications and GPS systems... that means everything from phone calls, to cable TV, to the internet, to air travel would have big problems.... far bigger problems than the last solar maximum 11 years ago (which was considered a relatively quiet one... while all expectations are that this one will be rather busy.)

MAJOR SOLAR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected an X5-class solar flare from big sunspot AR1429. The blast peaked on March 7th at 00:28 UT. Radiation storms and radio blackouts are possible.

spaceweather.com...

Biggie eh! That should bring the OMG There will be Mag 10 earthquakes crowds out!!

Doom, doom and more doom!!

So, you're contending that solar flares can do nothing to the Earth? If they can affect Earth, then they will. Stop deriding people when they talk about the possible. Only deride them when they talk about the impossible. I mean, if it is possible that solar flares can do some damage to the Earth, then maybe you're wasting your breath?

Sorry this is not relating to the flares, but could a moderator find out why it says I have 0 flags next to my name. It has been like that for a while. Just wondering, no big deal...
