Blast it or paint it: Asteroid to threaten Earth in 2013

rt.com

To avert a possible catastrophe – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint or big guns. The stickler is that time has long run out to build a spaceship to carry out the operation.

NASA's data shows the 60-meter asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, will whistle by Earth in 11 months. Its trajectory will bring it within a hair’s breadth of our planet, raising fears of a possible collision.

Well, for all of those who thought we wouldn't have a space object to worry and fret over this year, it appears NASA has come through to supply something. I suppose they thought that after Elenin, things were too quiet or something.

So, here we are with a new visitor predicted to come inside the orbit of our Satellites (Just over 16,000 mile pass distance). Oh goody.

...and here I thought we'd only have to worry about ancient predictions and Government plans to kill us all. A wayward Asteroid hitting us almost seems familiar, like an old friend. Ugh... Welcome to 2012.

Much better title. This deserves to stay.

This ones deserves the hoax bin!

I'll be honest and say i didn't read the article, but i did read another one relating to this earlier..

My question is, How would painting it have helped? Maybe I didn't understand part of this plan...

Reading the articles are always advisable:

Paint would affect the asteroid’s ability to reflect sunlight, changing its temperature and altering its spin. The asteroid would stalk off its current course, but this could also make the boulder even more dangerous when it comes back in 2056, Aleksandr Devaytkin, the head of the observatory in Russia’s Pulkovo, told Izvestia.

Easy! To make it purdy while it smacks into us!

Come on now, it's 2012, why haven't we invented giant lazers to surround the earth and blast anything that comes close to smitherines? Come on scientists, hup hup, stop working on stupid weapons to bomb other countries, they won't really help if an asteroid knocks us into the ice age will it?

Maybe an asteroid threatening earth in 2012 is the new enlightenment some people have predicted to happen. If something can make us stop fighting over nonsensical bs, it'd be an asteroid barreling towards earth.... if that can't, well then were all doomed regardless of being hit.

So I take it this will be the new "end of the world" date when Dec 21st 2012 surpasses?

2nd

You sure are a trusting person. If you don't think they have technology that would blow your mind then you might be interested in some swamp land down here!

It's been the common rule of thumb, that NASA and science is actually 40 more years in advance than they let on. That means, in 1969 when they went to the Moon, they were most likely using 2009 technology. And we're now using 2050 technology. I have no way of knowing or proving this just a feeling of truth here.

You may find this little clip of interest. Doesn't prove anything but gives one pause to consider what that was back in 1991.

If the asteroid is as big as a 20-story building (200 feet on a side), it has an amount of energy equal to the largest nuclear bombs made today -- on the order of 25 to 50 megatons. An asteroid like this would flatten reinforced concrete buildings five miles from ground zero. It would completely destroy most major cities in the United States.

Astro-source

So, bad, but not world ending anotherwords.

Big rocks from space get me nervous when coming soo close. Hopefully if it does end up coming here, we will know well in advance where it will hit for evacuation (be it a land area, or coastal regions due to a tsunami.)

Gonna go with the "not going to hit us" plan until its MSM shown otherwise. I know some will frown at me using MSM as a source for such information, but frankly, the conspiracy 'its definately going to hit us" paranoia wagon has 100% fail status..so, ya..nasa it is.

Painting it might not help but that'll be prime advertising space

Just think, you might be feeling hungry and not know what you want to eat, you look up and there's a big red painted asteroid with a huge golden M on it.

Paint it read with big yellow arches on it! Everyone with a telescope large enough to see it will suddenly be overcome with a huge urge to run and get a Big Mac!

Painting might work, but I think it has to be done while it's still very far out.

On that note: 60 meters is not all that big, and more than likely would not survive entering the Earth's atmosphere. Still it would be quite a big chuck of something I'd rather not test that.

I've a feeling though that it will only pass us by.

no need to be concerned.

space is cold.

really really cold.

asteroids are cold.

really really cold.

like -273. COLD COLD.

this means asteroids will be very brittle.LIKE ICE IS VERY BRITTLE.

but worse.

how do you break a cold brittle object?

give it a thermal shock

like a bomb.

or a mechanical shock.

like a vibrator.

the missile with the vibrator will be fired at the asteroid and it hammer action cause it to disintegrate.

or even a small bomb will cause an asteroid to shatter.

don't believe me?

remember how they dip a flower petal or bananas in liquid nitrogen and then shatter it in school?

same principle.

it is cold in space.

very very cold in space.

why does it feel like ive heard this before?

oh right...because i have...

its been happening for the last 20 years or so..."an asteroid on a collision path with earth!"

never happens...im not worried about this not one bit

If you paint a happy face on it people won't think it's dangerous.

It happened in the USSR not that long ago. Leveled an area somewhere. They didn't know ahead of time about that one.

yea but wasnt that asteroid way bigger than the one predicted for 2013?

i think this one might be small enough to Disintegrate within the atmosphere
