Hoping for Ideas

I have to come up with a topic to discuss in class on the following question...

Identify an invention, discovery, theory, etc. that turned out to be flawed and discuss the impact this flaw had on society and culture.

My original idea was to discuss the belief that the Earth was the center of the Universe. The problem I have with this is that I can't find any info on the impact this had on society. I mean, society was not really "affected".

If anyone can give me some ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I've done searches, but nothing that really stands out. Thanks in advance.

Why not try the theory of "Creation"

How about the thoery that the earth is flat? That effected alot of attitudes and perceptions around the world.
