Test

Here is a little test

To ensure this test works once you start you only have 10 seconds and only 10 seconds to complete it.

Then after the test and only after look at the results.

OK? You ready?

Here is is, get your watches out, your 10 seconds start now and please do not look at the answer first.

Please count the number of “F” in the text bellow:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE-
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF-
IC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE
EXPERIENCE OF YEARS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Are you done?

OK?

How many?.....3?

Are you Sure???

The real answer is:

6

Yep go back and read again and remember pay attention to the small details.

You see our brain is programmed not to see the small details such as 2 letter words. Now the questions is

" Is our brain just like that or was it programmed this way?"

How could programming a brain to skip the small details help any particular group? Mmmmmmm

You're absolutely correct.

I had to read that three times.

I even "read" it backwards, thinking I would beat the game that way. Still counted 3 of them. Of course now that I look at it after seeing your answer, I can't believe I didn't see the other 3. Interesting...

Wonder what it means about how our brains are wired or how we're conditioned to see things?

I also had to re-read again and again. The second and third time, I still couldn't see past 5 of the Fs.
Interesting, even when looking for the details, I still wanted to gloss over the one "of".

I finally found six Fs

First of all, I thought I counted 7 "F"s, but that was just because you stressed me out before I took the test.

Everyone can see there is 6 F's there, even if you do it on those 10 seconds. Even less.

And can I ask where the detail was?
That is not what I call a detail.

A detail is like when you find something very attractive about a persons face, even though the person may not be the type you normally go for.

And what else can you really use details for?

Don't take me wrong, I love details and go after details.
But its pretty useless, if you want to survive.

So is detail something we got from our past, or something modern society have developed?

It's like politics. Saying all Big stuff which everyone notices and small stuff barely nobody notices. very nice test.

Do not think this thing specifically is brainwashing. It is just how our brains are wired I believe.
You can however train yourself to notice detail. I got 6 because I have seen these kind of tests before and knew what to look for.

what, what, did none of you above top posters count right the first time??

I might want to rewrite my other reply?

I counted 3 the first time so it worked on me.

If this is true it makes me wonder how or why it works on a lot of people. The couple posts I read where it didn't work the person knew what to look for. I don't know if it's brainwashing or not but it's a cool trick.

This is very Interesting..

I also had to read it a couple of times to find the 'F's

I sure missed them in the 10 seconds. I would think it is more cause of the sound that of makes is more of a v when you are reading. This is odd though.

Excellent test! and point well taken...I had to read it 3 times as well...kept ignoring the "ofs" like everyone else...Nice to know it's a common wiring problem!

Had to look for like 10 times beforing getting to 6.

It's weird. Must be some blindness, there are lots of funny tricks on the internet.
For example:

Try to count the number of black dots on the image below...

No, your brain is inclined to dismiss the "of" because it has no significant bearing on the subject.

You can even do this and still make sense.

SDUTY CBIMNOED WTIH THE

People are more likely to make mistakes when they feel they are under pressure

Putting the test to them in an exam like condition with threats of a countdown against a clock with put people under pressure.

This is why they they dont pay attention and see 3.

I guess you could call it a sort of brainwashing or mood alteration I guess.

but then if you were to say

please stick the kettle on, have a cup of tea, relax, maybe have a biscuit why not?, no rush but if you dont mind, could you please have a look at this paragraph and answer how many times the letter F appears in all the words?, thatd be great thanks, remember, no rush, take it easy, its not a test.

People will probably identify all the letters almost immediatly.

Not true...99% of human beings will only see 3 "F" no matter how you present it.

It's because when we read we look for important context.

Instead of reading, if you simply scan for letters (like the engineer did) your brain will treat the information as just symbols.

That's why I read it backwards - and I still skipped over the "of"s. I suppose my brain was still processing context even though I was trying to trick it into scanning the symbols.
