Japan: China a major threat.

China's rapidly growing inluence in Asia has not gone unnoticed by the Japanese, and they are now recommending that it's considered a military threat.

Reflecting growing wariness between the two giants of Asia, an advisory panel to Japan's prime minister will recommend that China be viewed as a potential military threat for the first time, a newspaper here reported Wednesday. Since the end of World War II, Japan has regarded its main military threat as coming from the north, Russia, and from the west, North Korea. But now, according to the report in Japan's leading business newspaper, Nihon Keizai, the 10-member advisory panel to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will recommend that China, to the southwest, be regarded as a potential military threat.

Some analysts said China could eventually become a military threat to Japan, but that Tokyo should not anger Beijing by hastily jumping to the conclusion that China is a regional threat.

�China is potentially a military threat to Japan,� said defence expert Haruo Fujii. �But China has never shown an intention of waging war against Japan in the past.�

Fujii said branding China as a military threat would upset Beijing and could set off an arms race between the two Asian neighbours. �If Japan designates China as a threat, it will give an excuse to both countries to compete over military power and aggravate bilateral ties,� he said.

Eastern Asia is simmering like an order of General Tso's chicken. Will Japan fuel the fire by labeling China a threat? The Chinese people already have a strong anti-Japanese sentiment stemming from WWII, could this lead to a call from the Chinese people for China to take what they can get, such as underwater mining rights and lands claimed by both nations? Asian politics will become increasingly interesting in the next few years.

Japan has it coming to them. Sooner or later, they will be receiving what they've been dishing out to Asians for a long time.

What do think about the Okinawans? Does this peace loving, non-threatening people deserve the same? China needs to back off immediately! I won't say "or else". You don't want to know "or else".

Frankly after the way Japan has behaved in Asia and China over the last century they ought to keep their wallets open and their mouths shut and count themselves lucky it stays at that.

As for these 'specialists' and advisory boards etc etc well they're like any old opinions IMHO and carry about as much weight. You can always dig up someone to spout a story to suit a particular line. So what?

If Japan wants to label China a threat go ahead. Big deal. Makes a change.

But they won't. Because they have far too many business interests to hurt.

Okinawans used to have their own nation, called "Liu Qiu", aligned with China. I hope in the future they will gain their own nation.

Japan has some un-paid debts to China, so-to-speak (for example the rape of Nanking). They shouldn't do anything to make the Chinese any angrier with them then they already are. Wounds like that don't heal quickly.

You Japan lovers should read the book the Rape of Nanking. After reading it, you will begin to understand the true character of the Japs.

I am looking forward to the day when China, Korea, and all the other Asian nations which suffered under Japan's hands can payback the Japanese in a very real ,and literal way. Japan must be punished severely.

The Japanese youth of today foolishly think they are not asians. They actually think they have more in common with the west than the east.

I relish the day we (asians) can pay back them friggin japs.

You do realise all of this was brought about by the recent China - Japan football match and the following riots dont you?

No major western thinkers gave a monkeys and the national news channels certainly didnt up until then. But now that all this has been brought forward in western minds it's all going to get alot more heated.

Make no sense. Germany should stop compensation for Jews and other nations. Nazis are long dead. It is wrong to ask Young German to pay for what their grandparents did.

What a hypocrite. You support the Okinawan's in getting a nation (where there is no evidence that there is mass support for it), but you oppose the right of the Taiwanese for the same (where there is tremendous support for it.)

I don't think china is a threat anyway you could not get the guys out of the casinos long enough for them to work never mind fight.
