In some ways I think it is. the ignorance is well hidden in the wording so many may attract but not see to whatthey are attracted to. Sort of like other slang words used by the species in different races. It sounds cool but is still ignorance.

ETA: I totally missed the specifics here, doh!
I think novelty sells, and it comes in all forms but the most unique is often funny and thus makes for good ratings I suppose. Racist? I guess some would say yes, but that is in the eye of the beholder. I think wackiness sells, and some redneck practices could be considered a bit whacky.

Shows like these are watched by two types of people.

The first type sees it as a freakshow.

The second see it as proud reflection of their way of life.

Whichever one of the two you are saying "no way! who would look at it that way?" to defines which group you belong to.

if anything i'd imagine it would be a glorification of that life practice, since those dumb hicks are generally the backbone of american society, determining ultimate decisions for the rest of us. wouldn't you want to maintain the status quo if it were working so good for you?

I don't know. It seems pretty head on blatant racism to me. The way these people are put on tv to be laughed at is pretty sickening to me.

I mean, I don't go "mudding" or eat squirrel but then again I certainly dont laugh at people that play lame games like golf or eat pigeon and call it squab just to make themselves feel better about what they are eating.

I guess my real question is, why the hell is it ok to make fun of these people and their life style ?

I see it a different way. I see poorer people making the best of their lives and being offered obscene amounts of money to display their way of life not knowing until it is too late that they are being made into laughing stocks on purpose by the most racist segment of our society.

You forgot Bayou Billionaire...that's another one, hehe...

Oil was struck on their land, Beverly Hillbillies style, and yet most of the family still lives in trailers on family land....

I love these shows, yes they are freakshows, but they are very entertaining. The Vacation one is especially good, because of the culture clash between them and the typical Hampton elite crowd.

I think the shows have a certain reverence for the "redneck" though, and while they poke fun, it's really in a comedic, not mean light.

Yes they are entertaining to a point. I guess the clash is what makes it funny.
