The individual is not required to apply, but once he does then escape may require him to do things that he does not desire to see or do. He may desire to make excuses instead of diligently examining the problem or doing what is necessary to overcome the situation.

Correct. Unfortunately, paying the FICA tax is mandatory.

How many thought it was Insurance?

It is based on the same principle: pooling risk. Did you know that benefits can be denied?

A SS card may not be mandatory, but try finding a job without one..... good luck with that.

and I don't agree with your assesment that it's the mark of the beast. There are no restrictions on individual commerce if you don't have one.
