Tropical Storm Jeanne lingered over northern Hispaniola early Friday, where it battered the Dominican Republic with heavy rains and 70 mph (110 km/h) winds a day earlier, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

The speed of the now tropical storm is 65 mph (100 km/h).

The storm's center was 70 miles north of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and "has been moving little during the past few hours," the NHC reported.

Jeanne is expected to continue its west-northwest track near 6 mph (9 km/h)later in the day.

Jeanne reached hurricane status early Thursday with winds of 75 mph (120 km/h) before losing strength later in the day.

The NHC forecasts some additional weakening as the storm moves across Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. However, Jeanne could regain hurricane status over the next day or two.

A Category 1 storm has winds of between 74-95 mph (119-153 km/h).

The center of the storm will move along the north coast of Hispaniola Friday morning, the NHC said, and be near the southeastern Bahamas later in the day.

Hurricane warning remains in effect for the southeastern Bahamas including the Acklins, Crooked Island, the Inaguas, Mayaguana and the Ragged Islands, as well as for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Jeanne is now a depression with 35mph winds but back over open water, barely. The wind shear is suppose to weaken over the next day or so and the system is forecast to move away from land where its expected to restrengthen quickly.

Right now it's stationary at the north coast of Hispaniola, so hopefully it will dissipate...
