Question:

Why are these old, abandoned and seemingly haunted structures always psychiatric facilities/TB clinics?

I'm not trying to be critical, but it seems to be the trend. Even in my current city, there is such a place as this and it used to be a TB facility.

This place has been on my "must see" list for years! Whenever (if ever) I'm in New York I'll be renting a boat and heading out there!
I didn't read all the replys, so sorry if anyone else mentioned this, but it was features on that show "Life After People."

I recently watched CROPSY on Netflix about a rash of abductions that occurred on Staten Island in the 70's/80's that centers around an abandoned hospital (asylum) in a forest there. A Must See if you like creepy building images

I watched that too! It was a good doc! There's a follow up (sort of, with more focus on patients) called "Willowbrook: 25 Years Later."

Anyone besides me find these 2 lines from the story peculiar?

Closed in 1963, it is now a haunting labyrinth of crumbling ruins.Protectedbirds are its only inhabitants and the waters around the island are patrolled by armed coastguards who ensure the sanctity of the former quarantine zone is never violated

Since the island is abandoned, why does the coast guard have ARMED men patrolling the island's perimeter? Why can't "the sanctity" of said island NEVER to be violated?

and

Despite being in the middle of New York, North Brother Island has remained sealed off from the world

SEALED from the world.

Wonder what in the hell they are hiding there....

They have it patrolled for 2 reasons . . .
1)To prevent drunk teen partying and injuries.
2) There was also a ship wreck there in the early 1900's that spilled a bunch of chemicals or something and killed over 1000 people. I can't exactly remember what happened, but the info is easily Googled.

Thank you for the link and the kind person that posted some of the eerie pictures.

One picture really bothered me, if someone lives around there, there are some books that look like in readable condition - I love books (now own over 2,000) could someone try to salvage some of those books, some of them look like they are in halfway decent condition.

That's where I would go first and look at the books - never know what you will find.

When I go to the used book store, Sam knows me by name and knows I'll be camped out there, looking through his stack for the 8 hours he's open.

Heck he's even ordered us both lunch a couple times.

Just throwing a bunch of books down is a waste.

Eerie place never the less.

Has a sad feeling to it.

I wonder if the photographer kept looking over his shoulder for Pyramid Head?
Just for grins, someone should've sounded an Air Raid Siren.

No doubt. I'm pretty sure Konami took a look at this place when getting inspiration. Centralia is actually what inspired it but North Brother Island probably had it's place in more than one developer's heart.

Actually, Centralia inspired the town model in the Silent Hill movie.

As a long time Silent Hill nerd, long ago there was information floating around the internet about the original Silent Hill game's development. The developers actually chose some small, real town as the model for Silent Hill 1 and even copied its very streets and shop names into the game. I honestly just tried and failed in searching for the article (history has re-written it all with the movie popularity
), but I know that it isn't the same town that that inspired the movie writers (a decade after the first game) because the original game model was based off of a town that was actually populated- in fact, the town was actually interested in being portrayed in the game.

I really wish I could find a source to back that up, but the Silent Hill messageboard that I used to frequent died long ago... But just sayin' anyways

Spooky place to be sure. It also reminds me of Shutter Island, especially since in the 1950s it was used, unsuccessfully, to treat heroin addicts, possibly against their will.

It's off-limits because it is now a bird sanctuary and the old buildings could collapse. It is patrolled by armed guards because of its proximity to the nearby prison complex on Rikers Island.

www.opacity.us...

I would bet it's also still off limits because of the fear of any disease bacteria that might still be lingering there.

Speaking of spooky, did anyone else notice the lab-coated figure in the auditorium?

I know, I know, it's only the sun bouncing off the wall (as if).

I am constantly amazed at all the empty buildings there are throughout america, and the huge amount of homeless people there are, why is it the two never get to-gether?

I've thought the same thing, also. People are scared to live on OUR PLANET. That's why! You think 'the man' is just gonna LET people: move into abandoned buildings and houses, fix them up, and call them 'home'? hahahahha

Heck, i was homeless...at one time in my life; until i saw that abandoned house, and started cleaning and fixing it up. Of course, 5-0 was on the scene, days later, to tell me to LEAVE or go to jail. I stood my ground, and told them....this is GOD'S land, you don't own the planet. Then they were like: yeah well, they're knocking it down, and building a new one. What else could i do? I did, HOWEVER, find another abandoned house, and stayed there for a week or so; then the break came, and i was able to rent a small apartment.

My question is this: why do people think they own something on this planet? When we go, it stays. "The man" is a CONTROL FREAK. And when i say "the man", i'm referring to this "system" of lies, lies, and more LIES!

Dear citizens of planet earth......WAKE UP! There's millions upon trillions of acres of land, on this planet.....GO GET YOU SOME!!!!!!! THERE'S PLENTY FOR EVERYONE!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. Bring camping gear and a video camera. I bet some real interesting things would happen at night in a creepy place like that. It reminds me of 28 days later. Imagine waking up in that hospital with nobody around!
