Me I want the spell check button. I sux at typing and never really read what I type until I see it posted.

I need to spend some time rereading it first I guess.

The 'ignore button'. I remember that. It's for ignorning trolls. I only used it once and that troll seems to have gone away. There are very few actual trolls that show up here, but every so often one does. In the eight years I've been here I've only identified 3 or 4 TRUE trolls. (in fact, just discovered a real troll yesterday!).

I suppose you could use it to ignore people who just plain disagree with you.
But then, what's the point of discussion? That would make ATS an echo chamber.

Trolls usually end up disappearing after a while if you don't feed them.
It's tempting to feed them. They are oh-so-stupid and they trip over their own words in threads.
But if you stick to it and don't feed them ... they'll starve and disappear.

(insult removed) I'd like to read a thread without having to wade through the crap they post to find the good bits so could this be returned to us please?

That way there'd be less anger and less of a feeling that I'm one of the few intelligent members here...

I remember the ignore button! I don't remember if I ever used it, though I am sure it was used on me!
Anyway, I find I don't need a button to ignore something. But that is just me I suppose.

"Why post in here if you don't agree?"

That's the catch! I do agree, to a point. I think we should be able to (personally) hide posts/threads. What I mean, is have a little box on a thread that I can check to make it vanish from my screen. It does not have to be a public device, just a personal option.

"What's the difference?"

Well, I would not be ignoring a member. Just a specific post, or an entire thread. You can't tell me there hasn't been a time when browsing the boards that some "annoying (to you)" thread stayed up at the top. With this solution "poof", and you are not ignoring a person, just a topic of disinterest to you.

Just my two cents

Can I get a recipt, it is tax time you know...

While only SkepticOverlord can address the "ignore button" issue - it is a coding issue...

One can simply just skip over the person's post. It is actually very easy to do.
You see a name whom you simply cant ever agree with.......move on to next post.

You can just Self-Ignore if you wish.

There are a lot of Religeous nutjobs on this site, I just stay away from those threads.

There are a lot of "Earth People" here as well, I just skip their posts.

Sticking your head in the sand, just gets your hair dirty.

Well said! I have found the back button works wonderfully to leave threads that are full of nastiness. Certain topics are guaranteed to be that way. This site has a large degree of compassion for all of us, even the nasty ones.

An ignore button comes with the danger that, eventually, you'll only see the posts of thirty people.

There was a limit, you couldn't use the feature on an unlimited number of people, if I remember correctly.

I did not use it in the past, but am now desiring that feature reinstated. Count me as an "Aye" please bring it back.

The ignore feature is completely counter-productive. Just because you don't agree with someone on a constant basis doesn't mean you can't learn something from them. Be it an actual fact or simply patience. Then there's also the fact that most people would only use it to block people that don't agree with their worldview. For example, I'm sure many Nibiru believers would block Phage's posts and as a result we would see a lot more examples of people posting pictures of CW Leonis claiming it's Nibiru. That's not denying ignorance. That's called putting blinders on.

If the ignore button is brought back...can it be named "stick head in sand button" or "confirmation bias button"???

I personally like "confirmation bias button"...seems to describe it perfectly..

So you are saying no one, ever, out of hundreds of thousands of people on ATS, can be a idiot? I can't ignore a small handful of people I think are complete idiots? Call it what you want, I call it keeping my blood pressure down.

The issue was addressed in this post a while back.

Being aware of opinions intensely contrary to your own is a valuable aspect of intellectual growth... even those of fools, idiots, and purposefully provocative attention-seeking trolls.

deny ignorance doesnt mean lets read through hundreds of propaganda laced tripe while pretending to not vewasting time. Ive seen, Ive debated, and sometimes ignorance is the best defense against idiots. sure, if we could say how we really felt we wouldnt need an ignore button, but on a site that censors posts, how is that any different than ignoring something you know is intentionally meant to aggrevate?

Nothing is "censored" unless it's a violation of the terms & conditions.

Open and honest debate requires being open.

But isnt this "ignoring" it?

I always accidentally click minimize on forums and then have to click 'show removed forums' to get it back. how is ignoring forum categories okay but not ignoring members? if i ignore the gray area, isnt that the same as if i ignored all alien posters?

You said sometimes even an idiot can teach you a lesson, i am asking the site owner, is it okay to call someone an idiot if you think they are an idiot? if not, you are asking me to think differently and be dishonest, holding back my true feelings, how is that an open debate? shouldnt we call a spade a spade?
edit on 15-2-2012 by filosophia because: (no reason given)

Yeah yeah, I know the issue was addressed, I also know we ain't a gonna get it back, but people keep starting threads and, well, I say my piece.

As for "intellectual growth", I've been on ATS for six years. How much more am I going to learn and grow? Blocking ten idiots still leaves hundreds of others, if not thousands. It's not like I could block the whole site and never read anything.

Do not leave ATS. The serious ATSers need to get together and convince the Above Network to either stiffen the rules on rudeness, and maybe have it set up if one person gets X amount of complaints, not only said person be removed from ATS....but any and all posts be removed as well. That way the jerk's stench does not linger, even after he or she has been erased. Plus it clears up interesting threads, makes it easier to explore ATS. But yeah the condescending tone used EVEN by veterans of ATS, and a few mod, has almost driven me away permanently. I took a few months off recently because I grew tired of seeing 2 jerks go back and forth like two little girls. A PAGE AND A HALF (on my cell) OF A VERY INTELLIGENT THREAD (forgot title) THAT WAS TWO PEOPLE HEMMING UP THE THREAD-BACK AND FORTH-and one of them kept saying he would no longer contribute to such a intelligentless thread YET HE POSTS 6 MORE TIMES! Either the mods recruit more mods and get the job done or Above Network give us a complaint department.

Right here. Not to mention the Alert feature associated with every post on the site.

They do have a complaint department. If you have a complaint about the site itself you can post in the Board Business & Questions forum. If you have a complaint about another member you can either use the ALERT button or you can U2U a mod or admin. If something is off-topic or inflammatory and you alert a mod it will generally be removed.
