We live in the airspace of the Mesa Airport, used to be the Williams Air Force Base WWII era.
Since moving to Arizona in 97 it was not uncommon to see large military jets doing touch and go landings.
Also, Boeing has a location in Mesa and tests and builds military helicopters, so the airspace east of the Superstition Mountains is often buzzing
with high tech aircraft.
There also appears to be several privately owned small aircraft flying from airports within a five mile radius of the area.
However, I have noticed two curious activities; first there appears to be an increase of nighttime flights of helicopter type aircraft, up and above
what we have previous heard and seen, and secondly and most interesting about two weeks ago I observed 3 small, single engine aircraft flying in a
wing formation.
Initially I paid little attention and I don’t sit outside watching the sky.
This new behavior was however easily noticed as I would often walk outside and observe these 3 aircraft, fly “very” low in the wing formation, and
returning quite sometime later in the same formation.
My observations tell me these 3 aircraft are flying east to west following a grid pattern.
My first thoughts are small aircraft, either civilian and disguised military equipped with high tech equipment searching for meth labs or marijuana
labs. Both types are very easy to find given the heat signatures given off.
I have not observed the military planes flying low today as we just did return from a weekend up north.
I have however heard some very unusual aircraft flying over head at night, very, very low. Sometimes they seem to fly circular patterns it appears,
but it is very difficult to tell as these aircraft emit virtually no sounds, just the slightest of swooshing sounds.
