Kevin Carter did not live the high life.

He chased the vulture away, went over to a near by tree and smoked a cigarette.

30 days later he killed himself.

If you see a million babies starving, a million dogs gassed, a million children raped, where in sam hell do you begin.

It's like a hole in Hoover Dam the Size of a house.

My understanding is Kevin Carter did win awards and donated quite a bit of the monies to the relief of hunger.

He simply went mad at seeing the sheer number of starving babies.

Now in answer to your question, I will pose one to you.................he made the world aware of this problem.

What have you done to eliminate human suffering??????

If you come back at me with what I have done, yes I will give you a list and it's a long one because I have put my money where my mouth is.

Do not judge another person, you - me, we did not personally know this man.

Simply worry about what you, yourself are doing.

Giving a homeless person a used blanket and a bag of groceries.
Picking up some trash laying around
Asking your elderly neighbor if you can pick him/her up anything while you, yourself are going to the store
Putting a quarter in a parking meter that is over due and the car is old and junky looking
Giving to Toys For Tots
Giving to Hunger Relief
Joining the Peace Corps
Joining Building Habitat for Humanity

Anything, it all begins with us caring about each other.

You must have forgotten that Whitney Houston was far more monetarily wealthier than the net worth of a million starving 3rd world Africans.

Whitney Houston dies, she takes with her a legacy of success and much envy from the modern United States population.

One million starve to death, they take with them nothing of envy.

It is sick, it is wrong, and humanity should be ashamed. However this is the current belief that Capitalism promotes at America's socioeconomic scale.

Capitalism has its winners, those winners are applauded, loved, and cherished.

She could also sing. People can miss that.

Mainstream media plays what pays.

And all of our mainstream media is now owned by eight large corporations.

Why would the live of your dog be more precious than any other life? It is not logical. It is saddening. It is a problem.

Is it because we feel that we don't have time to have sympathy or at the very least empathy for others? That we have so much invested emotional interest in the beings close to us?

to each their own, but IMO, your perspective (sorry to say) sucks

I would choose my dog because the dog is of more value TO ME than the stranger(s). It is okay to be selfish. We can't save everyone.

Absolutely. In my head it's all about the priorities. If it were a member of the family, I'd save them of course.

It was not 1 hour ago that I said the exact same thing to my fiance. And then I came upon your thread. I totally agree. Whitney was human with problems, but apparently no one really cared that much about her as to get her help prior to her ending up in a bathtub, alone and lifeless. She may have been a rolemodel in her hayday, but we also need to expose the reality of the situation, we can't condone drug abuse and selfishness that was her at the end (and many many others).

usually, if I talk about this they look at me like I'm a madman and they just say something like: "well she/he was good, they like her/him..."

it's people who have wrong chips in their minds.

My wife and I had just come back from church, where we listened to a visiting missionary, and wrote a tithed check to help starving children in Africa, when we turned on the TV and saw the story about Whitney Houston. The first thing my wife said was "Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone who was so concerned about Houston's death wrote a check for those children in the world that are one step away from a starving death? In fact, wouldn't it be wonderful if those that God gave much to, contributed much of their earnings to help such a cause. Perhaps we could wipe out starvation in the world. My wife is a wise woman.

Peace.

More than at least 80 years the West is sending money and goods to Africa... do any of you see any changes at there? They won't change... they would be slave from the white, so should Barack Hoessein Obama be too.. and he is on top of the world... didn't anybody learn from Africa?

My God, I don't even know where to begin with your post. Perhaps I should just leave it alone, because it says all anyone needs to know about your views.
"As for starving children, there, but for the grace of God, go I."
Those on ATS that know me personally, know that we adopted children from the third world, raised them, and now they have adopted children from the third world.
We would adopt more if we could, but at our age, it would be unfair to the children, thus we contribute what we can.
I hope not many hold your beliefs, because in my humble opinion, THAT is why things 'haven't changed".

This just magnifies our current societies misplaced priorities.

Whitney had a good voice, but other than that, in the great scheme of things, she was a nobody.

It breaks my heart that in this day of 'advanced' technology, so-called 'enlightenment' and 'humanistic' ideals, that ANY child is starving, lacking medical care, and are targets of control freaks.

The majority living in 'first world' societies (i hate that term), in my opinion, gets way too comfortable in luxury cars, (any car is a luxury), luxury homes,(indoor plumbing. running water, electricity=luxury) and our consumerist lifestyle to give a 'rats patootie' about whats going on outside their comfort zones. The phrase "let them eat cake' comes to mind, and as long as the gravy train (bread and circuses, ie free entertainment and other mental distractions) continues, the mantra will be "Someone should really help those people! Pass the biscuits please."

Shameful, really.

The OP's picture reminded me of another one I recently saw.

I'm not doing anything to change things in this world.
But I do recycle where ever I can.
What can I do? When I was younger I tried to bring small changes to my community (Population 1200), Have you heard the saying "Work the Willing Horse". Some people just can't be helped.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if 100% of all donations went directly to the people they were intended for... and the people in control didn't play politics with other people's lives???

With al my respect...but nothong will be changed if you took off there own responsebility. They know God, but if they want to do it theirselves it became from nothing to nowhere. How come the West to be rich? Because of their faith in the Lord not by doing their own thing. I'd seen so many so called African Christians to come to Holland because they think they bring the Evangelic here but it is all theirselves what they bring... God is NOT number One, they sit on their own throne and they often here the gospel...

Do you ever heard about these verses:

Luk 12:22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.
Luk 12:23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.
Luk 12:24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?
Luk 12:25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?
Luk 12:26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
Luk 12:27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Or maybe the song to search First the Kingdom of God and all what of you need you will get of Him!!!

It very much depends upon the charity.

Not all charity's work the same way. They, too, have to pay bills...but you do have to be careful which you give to.

There are reputable organizations where the vast majority of contributions (well in excess of 90%) DO go to those who need it most. We contribute to an organization that a relative of ours is a member of, and spent years over in Africa helping educate, feed and attend to medical needs of those children, so we KNOW that this organization is legitimate.
Furthermore, virtually no organization, no matter how honest, can apply 100% of all donations directly to the people who need it. Things like air fare for the workers, shipping costs for goods, etc. are necessary expenses.
