Not to tread on our resident appointed history major but how in the name of anything can you say that symbol wasn't associated with the Nazi's???

It's on the SS's uniforms for gods sake......

For those who do not know already these Marines are SCOUT SNIPERS ence the SS they were not trying to offend anyone like some people think. These are 18 and 20-year-old soldier's that are simply representing their MOS. They use the flag because it looked cool to them not because of its history. Marine snipers have been using that insignia since the 1970s before everything became all PC. People are making too big of a deal out of this. Veterans and soldiers understand how this came to be is the civilian populace that's all outraged about it.

You may feel this is in poor taste but you are seeing what you want to see instead of seeing what it means to them.

I simply said it isn't associated with the Nazi's as much as some other symbols such as the Swastika are.

Seriously...you bought a T-Shirt with Che on it... and didn't know who he was?

Seriously... you bought a Xmas Tree ornament with Mao Ze Tung on it and didn't know who he was? Just like the one Obama hung on the tree in the White House...really?

Seriously... you bought a poster with a Marijauna leaf on it and din't know what it was?

Seriously... you bought a Skull and Crossbones pirate flag and didn't know that they sank ships, killed innocent people, and raped and pillaged?

Seriously... you bought a green shirt with a red star on it... the symbol of Communist Soviet Union... responsible for the deaths of more people than Hitler...really?

Seriously... you own a Japanese flag... responsible for the "Rape of Nanking" and the "Bataan Death March" and Pearl Harbor...really?

Seriously... you bought a Gasden Flag... the same one as used by some extremist militia outfits?

Seriously... you fly an American flag... the same country that kept slavery until 1865, interned Japanese-American citizens in camps during WWII, troops led by MacArthur fired on "bonus army troops", and installed programs to sterilize "less desirable" citizens....you sick bastard.

Frankly, if these Marines had posed with any flag or symbol...someone, somewhere would have been offended.

If you are so outraged, where was the outrage when Southern States Farmers Co-op adotped the SS in stylized runes on a patch that very much resembles the collar patch of the SS in WWII. Does that make everyone that buys and sells there a Nazi? Maybe a sympathizer? Or does anybody else get the right to use SS?

If a couple names their child Adolf or Heinrich or Herman... are they Nazis?

The abreviation for Social Security is SS... so when we see SS#...do I use my social security number or do I write 3rd SS Panzer Totenkopf or 2nd SS Panzer Das Reich?

Yes, I am being extreme and sarcastic, but hopefully someone will see my point.

Good point

People tend to make mountains out of molehills sometimes. Has anyone actually asked these guys what was going on with the flag?

I really don't know about that. If they used it regularly we would have seen it by now. Can you show me an example? They knew what they were doing. They knew it was a nazi symbol they just wanted to use it to represent scout snipers because they were being stupid.

Do I care? Not really. It doesn't look good, but neither does bombing whole families into the ground.
So eh.. they have a sadistic sense of humor. They are snipers after all.

You guys really think these guys knew what the SS was? Hell I didn't even know that it was a nazi symbol and I consider myself pretty well educated. So you think some derps in the military are going to know what it means? Distractions people... you all fall for it.

The SS looks pretty cool. Maybe that's why they used it. HERPDERP.

Sowilo, Sowilo, shine some f**kin' light.

ᛋ Sól er landa ljóme;
lúti ek helgum dóme.

They are just clowns, looking for a cool costume, nothing more.

But really??

Someone must have known.

Eh.. I don't think those are clean examples, but I get the idea you are going for.

Sidenote: Japanse flag? I don't know if that one belongs. Plus that flag is super kawaii.

Yeah "herpderp" except you just admitted to not knowing what one of the most recognizable symbols of the last 100 years was and consider yourself decently educated.

These are scout snipers, obviously you don't know what that involves, but they aren't ignorant. They know what it means. I knew what it was. I am 25, I am shocked that so many people are willing to get on here and confess they don't know what this symbol is.

Even our 40 year old military history major.

Folks need to grow up and realise that its possible to find certain images cool without subscribing to the underlying beliefs associated with them.

My cut off has a big old iron cross on one side. Doesn't mean I'm a Nazi. It's just a symbol who's original purpose was to offend Joe public. Over the years its become ubiquitous in the bike scene.

The same is true of the lightning bolts.

I don't think it's as simple as that when you are representing a country in warfare and holding up a NAZI flag under the American flag. It's easy to see why people would be upset. EASY to see. I personally don't care, but come on.

Reminds me of the time Prince Harry dressed like a Nazi for halloween. People do stupid, tasteless things sometimes. That's life. At least this didn't lead to someone getting hurt or killed, in this instance.

Just had a look through the book 'Otgansationsbuch der nsdap' dated 1943, could not find a double rune flag anywhere, there is a single rune flag for the 'hitlerjugend' on page 443, that seems to be about it, by the way, the single rune is Nordic sign for arbitrariness, according to the book I have on Nordic runes.

Just asked my two daughters what they thought the sign meant.......there answer....."Isn't that the sign the Nazi's used in the war?

My daughters are aged 13 and 14 with no interest in the military, or military history whatsoever, yet they seem to have a good idea it was used by a "not so great bunch" long ago.

Just saying.

You'd think that even if these guys were so thick/ignorant/whatever that they didn't realise it could cause offence, whoever made the flag would have known better. You're telling me no-one else saw this flag and thought the "font" slightly familiar?

Hey! Your teen and pre-teen daughters are smarter than half this thread! Including a history major (with focus on military) apparently!
You owe them some kind of reward.

I find it interesting people will believe high school kids don't know when the civil war was, but can't believe kids a little older don't know what an SS flag is

seems plausible to me

sadly

Do they even teach history over there? If I show that symbol to 20 people, they will all recognize it for what it is. Besides, to the poster saying that they might know, but thought the symbol was ''cool''... Well, they should've expected some heavy criticism for this behavior. People don't like seeing US Marines proudly posing infront of a SS flag.

Not to mention it's located directly below the US flag. I wonder if they have flown them together on anything?
