From an ecological standpoint it is survival of the fittest and therefore justified.
Everything we do is a form of manipulation when you think about it wether we are manipulating our environment, the people around us or our own emotions.
Thanks for your reply. I understand how burning a tree down could manipulate our ecological standpoint. I am more geared towards psychological manipulation; if you believe it to be good, manipulate someone into believing, is it justifiable just beacause you believed it was good?

Most, if not all, 'bad' manipulation is hidden, by nature...otherwise, it is accepted by the manipulated party to some degree...
With regard to...'good' manipulation...a distinction should be made between...manipulation of thought, and manipulation of action.
If you slap a childs hand away from a power outlet, you are manipulating its actions by introducing your own...but, i doubt whether this would be argued against...
If you tell a child that if it does not pray to Jesus every night, that it will go to hell...you are manipulating its thoughts...totally arguable...
Every unit has the ability to, at some level, make up its own mind...when that mind is being made up for it, this is bad manipulation.

Would you agree slapping the child's hand away was a form of manipulation? Wouldn't he or she have learned without you? And yes, to put it easy: RELIGION IS MANIPULATION
