some of the most perverse acts of brutality that have ever been recorded in history

Well, while you are right there.. I could go on about Communism, but I won't, I'll just leave it as it is.

Would you like to take a guess at why the "decision to punish" them was handed down to command of their unit?

If you guessed "because no one gives a # about a picture" then you were correct.

I appreciate their honesty. It is something we need to see more of, quite seriously. If the American government and military are going to behave in a manner which emulates Nazism, then it is only the honourable thing for them to do, to make it very plain to people, what they are supporting.

I was with H&S (TACP) 3/9 and carried a PRC-29 with every grunt company in the BN. on at least one operation and a couple on 2 or more in 1968-69... We were sons of WW2 veterans commanded by a WW2 veteran the had been awarded The Medal Of Honor... There is no way in hell that there wouldn't have been some asses being kicked and filling sandbags for having their pictures taken with the S S banner like the snipers in the photo have... Our snipers were very serious people that moved around a lot.. I doubt that there was ever a time that a group of them that large was ever assembled in an area where a picture like that could be taken of them....

Thats it.

They feel like nazis now.

That is their way to scream out to the public, as they knew it would go public.

It is their way of screaming for help, they want the public to act now, before they have to go back and kill more innocents, rape women when ordered by their captains so they would have a catch on them, and blame it all on a fictional enemy again.

Don´t you guys see this?

Interesting perspective, but sadly, I doubt it. The degree of vehemence and aggression I see from military people here on ATS, tells me that there are unfortunately a very large number among the troops either believe what the government tells them about why they are deployed, or simply aren't even sufficiently interested in knowing the answer, to need to be fed propaganda at all.

I stopped playing computer games other than Minecraft on Peaceful mode, when I saw the intro from Gears of War 3. It was a blatant attempt to indoctrinate the player with the idea that the need for warfare, and omnicidal aggression are supposedly inherent, inescapable aspects of human nature; when as far as I am concerned, the opposite is true. If a person is brainwashed to a sufficient degree, though, they can start to believe it.

That, or it was just a misunderstanding (assuming your post wasn't sarcastic).

Now before anyone says anything, i'm no supporter of the war, or one of those mindless drones who shouts "they fought for your freedoms" or "If you won't stand in behind our troops stand in front of them" when anyone critcizes the military (which seems to be huge demographic on yahoo if the comments are any indication), I'm just saying that people being outraged over this symbol didn't realize that the symbol was being used long before that photo in a differerent context.

There's a lot of things you could criticize the military on, but this isn't one of them. Then again, I could be wrong (about this, not about the things you could criticize the military on).

I see what you mean, but I just don't think most reasonable people would see a person trying to bring a better image to the Swastika (or whatever you want to call it - the standard or flag of the Nationalist Socialist republic). Certain symbols, through historic association, have an undeniable connotation associated with them - and I think for a while longer at least, the swastika and the double sig will continue to be taboo in public. Keep in mind folks, this nation still has a fair number of holocaust survivors living. It's not some forgotten memory from several hundred years ago.

I see your point, and it's valid.

But really, a lot of the people in this thread are being way too irrational about this. For a sight that promotes denying ignorance...no, no. Too easy. I just think people would think a little more rational about this instead of jumping to conclusions. Nobody knows these guys personally. Nobody here has been a scout sniper. That I know of. Is it really so hard to fathom that maybe they're actually trying to put a better spin on the symbol? Wait, yes. Yes it is. Silly me. Trying to be rational. I'll just Zoidberg scuttle back to my little corner and say nothing more.

Read you sources please.

The Marines believed the SS symbol was meant to represent sniper scouts and never intended to be associated with a racist organization, said Maj. Gabrielle Chapin, a spokeswoman at Camp Pendleton, where the Marines were based.

I have a tough time believing they just didn't know lol. Probably not a brilliant idea for them to post those pics on the net considering the other incidents. tsk tsk

That is honestly moronic. I suppose we should let them wear swastikas on the arms as well? As long as they are good at their job and all.

I'm not anti-military at all but that is just stupidity incarnate. Not only is it highly offensive, but it denigrates seriously the reputation of the uniformed services, and the United States abroad.
What's the problem with 'swastikas'. Nazis used this symbol i know but it is a symbol in Hinduism.
As a hindu i view this symbol as a symbol of prosperity as hindu scriptures say.
It is used widely in Indian culture.

Does anyone really believe it's an innocent mistake?

The SS were blamed for killing millions of Jews and these men are proudly using their symbolism. This is bound to cause an outrage among the Jewish community. Even as a non religious person I find these actions to lack any respect.

Anyone notice how it's all a bunch of white guys?

Unfortunately Nazi's ruined it for all the swastika lovers out there. Guess they'll just have to find something else to offend people with.

Correct and that is where the germans got it from and adapted it. They also tainted the symbol so much that any prominent use of it is avoided.
