Starting a local militia...any suggestions

First off I would like to say I'm not starting some secretive terrorist group. I'm more interested in forming a group of like minded individuals to prepare for all kinds of situations (natural disaster, assist local law (missing persons), SHTF of all kinds, etc).

I have a book on starting and training militias (PM 8--94 How to Start and Train a Militia Unit) and it has peaked my interest in the subject. I was wondering if i could get some advice from members of militias in their area. Mine will most likely be fairly small scale with members providing much, if not all of their own equipment.

Please don't post about how militias are bad, how i must be a radical, etc...serious tips about starting and running a militia only please. Feel free however to debate/discuss other peoples suggestions.

Yes, I suggest you look over your shoulder and smile because you are now on the US terrorist watch list and your activitites are being monitored!

Don't call it a militia ;-) Keep great records of everything you do, especially financials. Expect to be audited annually by the IRS.

edit: also, write up some kind of rules and mission statements with acceptable behavior and stick to it in order to establish clear expectations of behavior and the possibility of expulsion from the group.

im a little scared of this since the whole fbi watching everyone on a terrorist watch list =[

Good luck with that. This, and the purchase of large quantities of ammunition/firearms are what get you in serious trouble. For good reason. They need to preserve the status quo.

I am not afraid to call it a militia (that is what it is) and if I'm not already being watched (diagnosed pyromaniac...dissident family) then they aren't going to care about this. Like i said I am going to be fairly public and available to both local law as well as fellow civilians.

I would first look into you state and local laws reguarding such groups to ensure you don't break any laws. I would also look for others in your area who would partner with you. Here in michigan we have various militia groups. One that is near me is just a bunch of dumb wanna be soldiers who are also convicted criminals. The Real Michigan Militia is full of good people and they do assist law enforcement with missing persons searches and other situations. As others have said, Mission statements would be a good thing. Also a good code of conduct for your members would be wise. Community service by your group would easily relieve any worries by your local populace as well. Alot of people would tell you to worry about the gov coming after you and how you'll be on watch lists and such. We are all being watched all the time and fear is what has allowed us to be put in the situations we are currently are. I don't fear TPTB anymore. They can take my life, my assets, or my freedom, but they will never take my free will. Good luck to you and I sincerely hope you have sucess in your pursuit.

Thank you, your views on TPTB are near identical to mine and the Michigan Militia is actually the group i am basing mine on. Way i figured it I'm not doing anyone any good being a paranoid extremist hiding in my bunker out in the woods. Real change and real good come from real action.

Good for you my friend!! This is Constitutiionally legal and by the power of the Constitution ALL Americans have the Right to Bears Arms and protect our land from all enemies foreign or domestic.

It appears that your intentions are good and yes ALL Americans should help their neighbors in times of need. We cannot rely on the government to wipe our butts all the time. We are self-sufficent, intelligent beings. The fact that most people are in fear of the government agencies is EXACTLY their plan. DO NOT fear them...they fear you that is why they stamp Constitutionalists "terrorists" so the MSM can post your faces on TV and feed the public lie after lie about you and how "evil" you are.

Thats how you do it without getting on the terror watch list, and those guys actually kill thousands of innocent people.

Good work tho, I respect you for standing up for your rights when others are doing nothing.
I think the best you can do is research everything as much as possible and teach knowledge to your members over everything.
