We had truckloads of goodwill with the people of Afghanistan after we helped get rid of the Soviets. We made all kinds of promises and we didn't keep any of them after the war was over.

In spite of this the people still welcomed us when we first came to defeat the Taliban, they had an overall good view of America.

Ten years later it is a very different story, very few Afghan's like the Americans these days. Every time Obama decides to do another drone strike and kills 20 civilians, their whole family (whats left of it) then hates America. This has been going on for far too long, it has become a modern day Vietnam, a political war that the troops aren't allowed to win.

I'm with Ron Paul, we get out the same way we came in, policing the world is not our job.

People's culture and upbringing in Afganistan is outright 'crazy'. US or any other foreign powers do not have much chance changing their mind set. It is one of the cases where a person changes himself when he decides. No amount of external counseling and encouragements will be of any help.

Once US leaves then Talibian will be back and it will be 'same old same old' fanatic nonsense. Guess US did achieve one thing, i.e. killing of Osama although at a cost of good $500B so far.

Cannot disagree with you. As soon as the Greeny Beanies left and took their Rucksacks of money with them nothing changed, well, got better anyway

maybe we just dont see the big picture.

I remember reading an interesting point of view in relation to this about a year ago (sorry can't remember the book's title but the author was a foreign affairs analyst called George Friedman I think...). This guy basically stated that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were never meant to be "won". By either side. He proposed the purpose of those invasions was purely to cause disruption and internal chaos so that the Islamic world would remain ethnically and religiously divided and the re-creation of the Caliphate (Islamic empire) would be an impossibility.
I don't know, given that OBL and the 9/11 pilots weren't Iraqis or Afghans, this man's theory carries some weight.

Exactly, the media has people believe that the country is a #hole, when in reality, it isn't.
