The U.S. has “expressed its readiness to extend assistance with regard to enhancing Georgia’s defense capabilities which implies new levels of cooperation, deepening existing relations in the key areas and implementation of specific training and assistance programs,” the Georgian MoD said.
Defense Minister Akhalaia said, that from now on the defense cooperation with the U.S. would focus not only on training of the Georgian troops for the Afghan deployment, but also on enhancing and improving Georgia’s "self-defense capabilities.”

Why would this be a surprise? Georgia has plans on joining NATO and the EU, why wouldn't they be supplied weapons by friendly countries?
Because Georgia is under Russia's geopolitical sphere. It's not the EU or NATO that is arming Georgia: it's the USA. I seriously doubt that NATO or the EU will accept a new member that is so unstable in its military actions as to invoke war with Russia.

So? Russia cannot sell arms to Venezuela or Syria? Georgia does not want to be in Russia sphere, rather in NATO - and it is Georgia (and NATO's) choice. Just as Venezuela or Cuba got every right to resist US influence and be close to Russia.
What does this have to do with NATO? Canada, France, Britain, Germany, etc, aren't arming Georgia; the US is (the Russians even confiscated American equipment when they kicked Georgia's ass). You think NATO is willing to give weapons to a proven lunatic so we can all fight Russia in an endwar?
At Bucharest we agreed that Ukraine and Georgia will become members of NATO and we reaffirm all elements of that decision as well as the decisions taken by our Ministers of Foreign Affairs last December.

Seriously, our men in Brussels would have to be truly screwed in the head to ever seriously suggest allowing Georgia into NATO. It is the US who is pushing it because of US geostrategy to encircle Russia and cut it off from the rest of Eurasia (hence the American "missile shield" in Eastern Europe).
And I repeat: Why would the EU accept Georgia as a member? EU won't accept Turkey because of various factors, none of which include murdering peacekeepers in order to provoke war with a regional superpower.
Georgia is a wildcard in the region, hence why the US is backing it. The US wants Georgia to cause as much trouble for Russia as it possibly can, to keep Russia tied up on that front instead of progressing elsewhere. There will be no Georgian integration into NATO or the EU; they are just prospects dangled in front of Saakashvili to make him do stupid things for his new friends.

Regarding 20+ members, even if 1 member refuses the Georgian entry then NATO cannot take it as a new member.
Who will do this work for Russia? Greece comes to mind right away. Any others?
Russia should try to get the real tune of the Georgian people because that is what is longer term. Current President of Georgian is a crazy power drunk type but his term is going to end soon I think.
MrSpad-
The US is hardly alone in suppling weapons to Georgia. 14 members of NATO do so as does Ukraine and Israel. Turkey in particular has played a role in rebuilding a training. The only problem with Georgia's NATO membership is that it has Russian troops in its territory. This complicates things.
