So this is the second year in a row, that I will not do my traditional Valentines Day ritual. This ritual includes me dressing in all black, getting bonkered out of my mind, and listening to sappy love songs, crying, cursing love and all the people that believe in it, and then passing out utterly alone.

Another Valentines Day has come and still in Love with the boyfriend, so I guess my goth outfit will stay hid in the closet for another year at least! However, I still deal with the whole Valentines Day as a sceptic. My friends at work call it the Hallmark Holiday, and say it is a complete hoax turned into something it shouldn't be just to make money by sellers of cards, flowers, and whatever else love makes people wanna buy their significant others.

I did some research and have heard the lot of St. Valentines stories and how red represents the blood of the people he had killed, but found another that was just as weird. Seems the Romans would get drunk, sacrifice a goat and dog, then line the women up (naked) and spank them with the tails of these animals. The women thought this would bring them luck and make them more fertile. Then they would have a lotto with the women, this decided which man got which women, and this was their celebration process on Valentines Day.

Interesting Huh?! I am interested to find out if anyone really knows the orgins of this Holiday, and other wacked rituals that people throughout time may have performed to celebrate what we all consider now: THE DAY OF LOVE! Is this day seriously worth getting our wallets out, or is it just as my friends say, a Hallmark Holliday?

What odd beginnings....

My hubby being a long haul trucker, I'm usually alone (other than phone calls), well, not totally alone, I have my 3 loving dogs
and my ATS buds.

"Special" holidays like this are weird, they often cause heartache for those that feel unloved, or not loved enough, or fights when someone doesn't get the "right" presents...

We handle it in a good way, if I want something, and my hubby is on the road, I just buy something, and let him know what he got me

Definitely another commercialized day...

Of course it's a Hallmark Holiday. As far as I can tell, Valentine's Day makes a lot of lonely people even more lonely. There is too much of an expectation, particularly among women, of some perfect romantic evening, which most men dread.

My husband and I don't celebrate it, because he can't remember one holiday from the next, and after being married for a while, what does it matter? Why should I get upset every year and force him to buy me flowers and chocolates and a card? He feels like a failure and I feel like a witch demanding tribute.

If I want something, I'll buy it. He takes good care of me, I don't have to work, I have everything I need, so why get weird over some date on the calendar? We'll just bypass all the rigamarole and go right to the end of the fertility ritual if we feel like it.

Hey simmer down now....that's my birthday! I will be 37 this year
Even though I was born on a "holiday" I don't really get into the valentines day stuff either.

Valentines day is definetly a halmark holiday. It is just for the people that love to get some expensive object during a holiday sale, even if that sale is only 10% off.
Personally, I don't believe in love, especially in todays world. Usually a relationship goes something along the lines of:
Guy: I love you!
Girl: I love you too!
*hugs*
*does a little more than just hug*
Guy: What were we talking about?
Girl: Who are you?
--End Relationship--
It creates a feeling of greater lonliness and sometimes depresssion to those that aren't, or don't feel loved. I do suspect that is partly the reason for half off chocolate the next day though.

Buy yourself some really nice Coco Butter, some really nice natural soap, something nice to drink (not too much or too strong) some flowers

All for you and order something in that you absolutely love.

Rent a good movie, one that isn't depressive but uplifting.

iherb.com has Now Shea Butter on sale...............you can add Lost Mountain Lavender (a couple drops) to the Shea Butter and stir it around with a butter knife................creamy and yummy on the skin.

In other words, make this day a ME DAY.............JUST FOR YOU..

The title of your thread had me going there

You want some real love, someone that will love you no matter if you get fat, old, poor or cranky?

Go down to your local shelter and get the dog closest to the death door and adopt him/her.

Thanks for the reply! I would go adopt but we already have 13 sled dogs we adopted from people that were gonna get rid of them, and a rescue house dog that is the BEST DOG EVER. Would adopt a cat but I am allergic.

That is was werid I would not want to be beaten with a dead animals tail or alive one for that matter.

I think valentine's day is stupid and pointless. If you are with someone they should let you know they love you all the time just not for one day it is much more romactic to recieve a gift on a differnt day and not just get gifts on valentine's day when they think they have to buy something not really coming from the heart if you ask me. Just throw you some gifts and expect steamy sex. Im gonna get sick.

I think I can safely speak for most males and say we'd be perfectly fine with skipping the gift throwing and just proceed to the next step.

By the way, it isn't the gift that's the issue. It's the damn shopping.
