That is the first thing that came to my mind, The Thing. What an awesome movie. Who knows what may be waiting for them in a 20 million year old lake. Our days may be numbered if they have unearthed something sinister. My vote is for a super pressure release that inundated the camp and instantly froze everyone in an icy tomb. We shall see. Still, I have the thing movie scenario playing out in my head.

There was an x-files episode about this when mulder and scully were stuck in the north pole and there was an organism that caused people to kill each other, think the name of the episode was 'ice'

I wonder how much longer are they gonna wait till someone actually goes over there and physically sees what is going on. According to the article, winter is approaching fast and it doesnt look too good if they want to recover any bodies or info on why the team hasn't responded.

To be honest,im actually thinking it will be something simple like they have found something very interesting within their samples and have imposed a blackout, rather than disaster but you never know.

Hey Baddmove...since this article is from today, and it is a press release from Moscow...it seems they are only communicating with their own government. I still think any lack of communication with other researchers, from other countries, is strictly political.

I was just talking to my budy about that last night. I had a bad hunch. Maybe a virus or something.. I heard somewere that the lake was under so much pressure that if they ever finish the drilling that it would blow like a soda bottle. Imagine a a couple million year old virus that has remained unchanged, no one has antibodies for and under extreme pressure from 2 miles of ice. A geyser spewing virulent water....nice.

Maybe they are just MESSIN with everyone you know those Russians! LOL

IIRC, the U.S. kind of pushed their way into a joint project, after the fact. Could be just politics at play here.

You're right, Des. I think one of the biggest aggravations I've had about this story is the fact that we're being left in the dark. Now, there's a bunch of billionaires down there right now, too, so they're getting the chance to see what's going on. I just wish they'd tell us, too. Drives me nuts!

Could be politics indeed, or they might have found Omega Supreme frozen in ice, and are now going silent so they can reverse engineer him and make an army of transformers lol.

But on a real note if they aren't dead then maybe they found something of extreme importance and don't want to share it just yet. Just know if we go to war with Russia soon out of the blue and this is unresolved. Then maybe this will have something to do with it.

Maybe you don't realize how important lake vostok is to the scientific community. I could buy that they just haven't contacted if it was 2 days, but if there has been no word from them for 5 days it's pretty clear that something happened. Besides considering how risky it was to drill into vostok with our current technology in the first place, fear mongering is pretty inevitable don't you think?

Apparently, people here don't understand how virii work. No big surprise, I guess. A virus is essentially a package of genetic material that is inserted into the nucleus of a cell, and forces the cell to make reproductions. This requirtes that the virus is genetically compatible with the host. Since there were no humans 20 million years ago, in fact, no hominids existed at that time, there is roughly zero chance that any virus that comes out of the lake can attack humans.

However, that is not the case for bacteria.

OTOH, there are a whole raft of other things that could go wrong, and the hypothesis that they found something interesting, and have gone dark should be a given.

So because the Russians don't communicate with the US "colleagues" for 5 days, this automatically means they must have gone missing? Because were that important? LMAO Maybe they just don't want to or have been ordered not to discuss outside of their govt. Looks like from the latter replies that drilling has begun again.. so they were not missing after all? Sorry, I'm having a lazy moment after my glass of wine and don't feel like clicking on links and doing a bunch of reading.
